Aha, I'd like to refer to you the Wikipedia entry for "French dressing" - French dressing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also, as it says, French dressing is different in the US to the UK. I tried it when I was in the US, and really didn't like it!!!

I've only had French dressing in the US and because it looks like runny ketchup, I can never eat it. I've had it before, but it was not good. But I'm weird like that.

Too me French dressing is a poor man's Italian...sort of like the two countries.

wow, I didn't know there were different french dressings! sounds like the one here is like the UK version - it looks like a yellowy clear colour? with some bits floating around.. it's yummy.

ranch, italian, french, all sorts of vinaigrette (basalmic, raspberry, etc), caesar, honey mustard, um.... I don't know what else! so many! there's a whole aisle at the grocery store for it. I love going to Japanese steakhouses and getting their salads with their "house" dressing, it's always a ginger something or other and very yum! I'm a vinegar and oil kind of person, myself.

I can't imagine not having a selection of salad dressing, only having one... that's so weird!

As a catering person I can honestly say I'm a total snob about salad dressing, and what's labeled as "French" dressing here in the US? Fucking YUK. The French should be (and probably are) horrified.

But, making good stuff from scratch will do that to you (make you a snob, I mean). My personal favorite is a toss-up between orange vanilla vinaigrette-- a recipe we came up with on the fly and is REALLY yummy on a fresh spinach, chevre, fresh strawberry and candied walnut salad-- and a really good, nicely aged balsamic vinaigrette. But that's just me.

I'm not sure if this was a reply to my post, but I just want to clarify that we do have more than one kind of salad dressing here! I just meant that I didn't know 'french dressing' could refer to more than one kind of dressing! I love having a big selection of dressings, too!

LOL must have been a misread. I was thinking, "I know more than the US has various salad dressings!" hahahahha

Honestly it was so cobbled together that I couldn't tell you an exact recipe other than we used some champagne vinegar, orange juice, vanilla and a dash of olive oil... but I found a more-or-less comparible recipe here if you'd like to give it a go. For home mixing you can use a blender if you want the perfect consistency with the oil. At the kitchen our saying is "All Hail The Great Robot Coupe". (you don't want to know how much something like that costs)
