This site: http://www.wikihow.com/Sew-a-Patch-on-a-Uniform
has a very good basic explanation for it.

A few warnings, before you start - if the backpack is waterproof, the stitching will create leaks where the patch is located. You can use seam sealer or seam tape to reseal your pack after you put the patch on.

Fusible web (essentially iron-on tape that can be found at most fabric stores) works very well, and you can use an iron to attach it, saving all the hassle of trying to sew it. Be careful, though - synthetic materials are heat-sensitive, and your pack may not withstand the heat needed to iron the patch on. (you can bring the pack into the fabric store and ask the clerk there for advice)

They also make fabric glue: http://www.save-on-crafts.com/oktowash1.html
This may be the best solution for the item - saving the wear and tear of trying to sew, worrying about damaging your pack or melting it with the iron...

I know that the same brands aren't available everywhere, but these products are sold worldwide (and, for that matter, a good silicone adhesive would probably do the trick, bond stronger, and is guaranteed waterproof)

excellent - thats just what i needed to know im gonna try and find a fabric store now hehe. my pack isnt waterproof as i chose buy a waterproof cover instead, and i always put bin liners inside them so was cheaper. so ill try some glue then see how it holds out for festvial season, the nmaybe add some stitching before trip to asia

Thats Great!!!! I've been doing the same thing for years. My pack has a patch from everyplace internationally I have been. Its amazing how hard it is to find a patch some places And ya know my Tpunk patch is on there too! I just sewed all mine on. I didn't worry too much about the waterproof issue, as I always carry a pack cover with me.
Love to see that other punks are doing the same!
Cheers

I tried putting my patches on, but after difficulty flying, I decided that not all patches are appropriate on your backpack...

(Mine says "I <heart> Explosives")

My stuff has the added bonus of all having explosives residue on it, as well...

Nothing quite like buying one-way tickets online, having an active Saudi visa on your passport and explosives on your luggage to buy you a free 90-minute tour of the TSA lounge...

Occupational hazard...
