That's a very cool map.

However, you're all wrong, it's called "soft drink"

Farmboys almost right, soft drink would be more acceptable than the two highly prissy "pop" and "soda" ways. In Ireland you have to be specific. If you you say soft drink you'll only upset the person your buying off and they'll demand to know which one you want.

My new years resolution is to be healty and go to work, when I do go to work to go to work on time.

It's a drink... that is fizzy!! As in carbonated. If someone asks me what I want to drink, and I don't want anything specific, I might say "something fizzy." Is that strange?

Quite.

Typical female vagueness. Beer is fizzy. Champagne is fizzy. Pellegrino is fizzy. None of these may be described as Soda, yet all are fizzy. Specificity is important.

re: Soda vs Coke

You know what else you can order? Whatever the hell it is you plan to drink! Do you go into a restaurant and say "I'll take an entree, thanks"? No! Of course not. You can only do that at a Mexican restaurant where regarless whether you order a Chimichanga, an Enchilada, a Burrito, Taquito, Fajita, Carnita or Gordita it's the same damn thing.

Everyone here in Texas says soda and it is supposed to be a "coke" state. Maybe it's just austin. Either way, it's unnatural.

HA! I am certianly not vague! I think we are all forgetting that all the terms are vague!! you don't say to the waitress "I want a pop" or "I want a soda". You say, "I want a Diet Coke" or "I want a Mountain Dew".

Pop/Soda/Coke (in its "slang" reference to a carbonated beverage in general terms) and even Fizzy drink is more of a "preliminary" request, if you will. For example, I could say, "Hmm, I have a taste for a fizzy drink" which would encompass Jamie's idea that it would encompass soda water, beer, POP, whatever... so then once you've established that this is indeed what you want, you then move on to "Specificity" (good word, ps)... "I would like a Miller Lite, please." or "I would like a Pepsi, please."

Example number two, I could say, "Well, I'm going to the store to pick up some pop!" This could mean a whole slew of things!! I could come home with Pepsi, I could come home with Mr. Pibb, or sweet Jesus I could go balls out and come home with some Ginger Ale! Nobody knows what I am going to do next! I could do something crazy and come home with anything!!

It's a defining decision-making process!

Damn Nicole, well said. I hope I can meet you one of these days, you sound like a riot.

But your slang term for the proper slang term of, "soda," is incorrect.

In the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston, Soda or Pop is Tonic. They still do it. In South Boston, subway sandwiches are calles hoagies. Go figure.

Um...both, maybe? I did pretty well for 2006, but 2007 was another story...not sure what to do this year.
