LOVE them Roxy. Well done!
I better get started on my funkin (for people who don't have porches to let their gourds rot on) and I'll post the pics if it's not too embarrassingly bad.

Yay pumpkins! I love the moment when you plop the candle in and it gets all glowy and cool. Here's the second pumpkin that I'd ever carved in my life, a few days ago.

Is that a rough draft of your tattoo?

Holy God that would be amazing. I would LOVE to go to a tattoo parlor and hold up a jack-o-lantern when they asked me what I had in mind...
So very very punk rock.

You should TOTALLY do that, Jess!
Very very rough, you might say, in the sense that it is a phoenix.

Wow, they're so great!! I'm a bit jealous of how big a deal Halloween is in the states. Over here, people don't get too bothered. We did a pumpkin once when I was younger, but it was nowhere near as good as all these!!

You know what, Hwei Ling, my luck, I'd go in with something badass carved on a pumpkin to show the tattoo artist, and I'd end up with an actual jack-o-lantern on my ass.

but it would make such a great story when folks ask why you have a pumpkin on your ass. you can tell the story of the "great mishap".

Wow, those are amazing! I'm barely artistic enough to manage to put a recognizable triangle in a pumpkin

In Ireland your traditionally supposed to use a turnip (pumpkin carving originated in Ireland we just didn't have any pumpkins). It's a right pain in the hole trying to hollow out a pumpkin with a spoon and the stink of the thing would knock a horse but Halloween just isn't the same with the smell of burning turnip.

Are pumpkins very common in other parts of the world? Here in the US they're not used for much other than pie, bread, and decorations so you don't see whole pumpkins much. I suppose they're as easy to grow as anything else though, just seems like there are plenty of tastier alternatives to plant.

You only see them at Halloween, all the insides are just thrown away I've never seen anyone keep the goop inside. They where saying on the news that there's a pumpkin shortage due to the poor summer and that allot are still green. I think they look better green.

You should try baking/roasting the seeds. Clean off all the seeds and spread them on a cookie sheet and sprinkle on some garlic salt or Italian seasoning and bake them in the oven until they get crisp. Good stuff.

pumpkin carving is my favorite part of halloween. here are a few things i do with them:
1. The Zack Special - this is a traditional pumpkin that i carve every year
You carve out a big piece for the mouth and then take that piece and carve it into a tongue. Stick it in the mouth with toothpicks, so the tongue is poking out. Then take a big gob of the pumpkin guts and spread them in front of the pumpkin with a small amount spread over the mouth. Do the eyes and nose however, but otherwise you get the Puking Pumpkin. Awesome.
2. Another, non-gross thing you can do is take the tops of pumpkin and mash cinnamon or other spices into the meaty underside. That way, when you light the pumpkin it wont smell bad but instead becomes kind of a scented candle.
Another thing that im planning on doing at least once is to have a pumpkin crime scene on my front porch. Smash one pumpkin and surround it with police tape Then have a pumpkin with a police hat and notepad standing next to a pumpkin with a wig and some curlers, and maybe a small robe. That way its like the police pumpkin is interviewing the lady witness to the murder! Hilarious!
