Default Travel or work, damnit, need advice.

So was offered a new job about a week ago, and it's something that I would be stupid to turn down. How often does someone get to shoot stuff into space? So that is quite exciting, as I would be making quite a bit more money and doing something more interesting.

BUT, that basically ruins my plans for quitting this fall and going around the world. I was starting to look forward to that, but I'm young, I still have plenty of time I guess.

What I'm hoping to work out is getting a couple months to give notice and take some time off. If I can get 2-3 weeks free before I have to start I might just do a quick trip.

So the question is...where? Say I have 2 weeks to go anywhere, here is what I've been thinking.
-The usual, Scandinavia and visit family /friends.
-Somewhere else in Europe, but I think I might go to Spain for a week in October to see the WRC anyway.
-South America, Brazil o algo, or even just Costa Rica area.
-Asia, Japan.

I'm located in Colorado right now, so pretty much any of those are do-able with Asia being a little further. And I'm not really thinking about doing any hard core backpacking, just a nice pleasant trip.

Advice?

New (awesome) job, so the RTW trip will have to wait.

Well if you're really gung-ho about the job (and it seems like you are) and just want to take a couple weeks I say go wherever you feel like seeing the most...we cant make this decision for you....but my vote is for japan/asia as that seemed like your original place you wanted to see anyways...and it's always good to stray from the "usual" (as you seemed to categorise europe as) and go somewhere new and exciting. just my 2c

I don't want to sound harsh but I also want to tell you to tell you to screw the job and go travel to be honest. But it really sounds like you want the job.

There will always be jobs just as good if not better then the one you were offered. There will not always be opportunities to travel.

Good luck with your decision...It is a tough one.

How about Iceland, its close and very off the beaten path. Extremely expensive, but very unique. We will be there in July, and after researching, if you have the bucks, you could have a truly unique and amazing experience in a week or so. Plus summer is the best time to be there. Still quite cold but close to 24 hrs of sunlight, so you have a lot of time to see things.

Or if you are willing to go as far as SEA, why not hit up Croatia and Greece.

To expand on Marc's suggestion, Icelandair allows a "stopover" for free. You can fly New York - Rekyavik - European Destination and stay in Iceland for a couple of days and they don't charge you anything extra on the ticket. Cool huh?

Spain would be a good use of two weeks as would Japan (I just got back from there and definitely recommend it).

It sounds like you really want this job but keep in mind that traveling in a "serious hardcore backpacking" way is something that gets tougher to do as you get older. Getting some worthwhile experience is great but beware of putting your dreams on hold. I had a job offer at a good company and because my trip was so long I risked the job being filled or the ticket being yanked away. My mom wanted to kill me for traveling. Turned out, I got hired and within a month I was told I should be looking elsewhere "just in case". That was a year ago but things are not pointing in a positive direction. I can easily see forgetting the details of this job (I will only remember the people...who rocked) years down the road but I will never forget the trip.

Im in a very simialr situation as I've been planning for the last year and a half for a RTW. Its hard not to let the idea or comfort of a jod keep you where you are and you do sound excited about the new job which is a good thing!

The one question I keep asking myself though is how I think I'm going to feel in the next 5 years whether I do the trip or not. I also come to the same conclusion in that I think I would regret not taking the trip. It's kind of scary to quit a good job and not know when you come back if you have the same opportunites but I also know that having the chnace to travel without anything holding you back doesnt happen very often.

Good luck with whatever decision you make.

A round the world trip sounds like something that you would have to get out of the way before continuing on with your life as it will always be at the back of your mind bugging you.

If it's a good job though it might be worth spending a year or two seeing if it's something you like then taking off. If your good at your job you'll more than likely find something similar when you get back (they might even hold something for you if your great) if your crap at your job and you hate the work then you've nothing to loose by leaving.

I regret not traveling younger and now at 30 I have quit my job and will travel outside the US for the first time to Europe in August. I don't plan on doing a classic rtw trip but I do plan to take a year or so doing a combination of traveling and volunteering abroad. I have always wanted to see the world and it was to the point where it was holding back my career.

It is not easy to give up everything you have been working on for 7 years to do something like this but it is hugely freeing. The amount of "stuff" I have amassed while having that good job is crazy...

Thanks for all of the advice. I think I'll probably take the job and do a few shorter trips for now.

I've been to Europe multiple times and don't really need to do this trip to have a 'worldly' experience, just wanted to get away for a bit.

I think I might actually do a road trip around the northwest US and see some of the national parks, and then this fall go to Spain for a week or 2. It would be cheaper and probably just as fun.

I'll get to SEA soon enough, I'm not one to put things off for long.

For the WRC? I think that's coming to Ireland this year, I hope it is anyway. I know Loeb is coming to the Donegal rally but it hasn't been confirmed if he's bringing the C4.

Yeah werd. I've been meaning to get to a WRC venu for a long time, so I'm forcing it upon myself now since my girlfriend will be in Spain at the same time.
