Default Living a Secret Life....

What a mysterious title....So I have my trip all booked and paid for...Leaving for a year in September. I plan on quitting work at the end of July. I really want to have 5 weeks to visit family and to start packing up.

As most of you know I work in a hotel. So quitting in July (mid peak ass tourist time) is such a no no..So of course I can't say anything. So here I am living a complete lie at work. I have all my coworkers always asking me random questions about what my next little adventure will be and about my summer plans...blah blah blah..Bottom line I can;t say anything about my trip to them...It's so hard to keep my mouth shut. While they are complaining about work (and me too most of the time!) , I feel like jumping around and singing 'Only two more months for meeeeeee!' haha but I can't. I know when I give my notice it will completly one hundred percent shock everyone.

Is anyone else living a lie right now like me?.. whew it's hard work. I'm so excitied to see their reaction when i tell them and let them know that Ive actually been keeping this trip a secret for a YEAR!

Thats pretty much how i roll. a lot of well paying places dont want to make an investment in you if they know you are only going to be a short term employee. atlot of my interveiws go "do you plan on being here for a bit?"

me: "yes sir, i want to make a career of this place, I have faith in our product"

only to walk off in a fews months

Yeah...me and my buddy are doing at the moment. Problem is I may loose my job before I leave which is bad because I need the money. Still I have been in that position before its kinda weird bitter sweet. You'll miss working with your friends but hey, it's no nice to know you won't have to deal with the jerks anymore!

I waited a while before telling my managers...and then it wasn't even me who told them in the end! I mean they knew I wasn't going to make a career of the job since I was in school when I first joined the company. Last June I decided I was leaving in June 2007 and that was it, no excuses. I told the one co-worker I'm good friends with and she let it slip in front of my store manager. That was no biggie though because the manager was leaving the company herself way before I was so she didn't care at all. The two managers I've had since she's left pretty much had to accept that I was leaving since my old manager warned them. A few weeks ago we had our regional manager in and the same co-worked let it slip....that time it didn't go over too well but he likes to travel so after I explained it he was okay with it. We have A LOT (like 93%) turnover with the company so it's really hard to find a perm, let alone a semi-perm, replacement.

Dio: Enjoy the secret life! My advice is make sure you don't slip up and blow your cover. My boyfriend/fiance/whatever decided to be nice and gave three-weeks notice at work and they ended up giving only 4 days of work the next 3 weeks!! Which royally screwed us because we were saving my paychecks for travel and using his tips for day-to-day living.

yeah, my wife and i were going to both quit on june 8 before we left. She has already quit, she got too frustrated, (financially shitty) me, i am sucking it up and trying to make it to the 8th, they have no idea and i'm glad. I tried working a 2 week notice at my last job and it turned into a 30 minute notice

I don't have to quit to travel. Applebee's allows a two-month leave of absence to visit friends in another country. I let them know about my trip last year two months in advance and several co-workers started giving me their shifts so that I could earn more money. It helped me reach my financial goal. Also I planned to travel for over three months so my general manager sent the leave of absence paperwork in late. The other good thing was coming home I had a job again in a week.

I gave my two weeks notice a few weeks ago and they asked me to stay on three more weeks to help with the transition of my replacement. It is kinda weird working the job and in the back of your mind your like...'I really don't care, in three weeks I am gone' So now I am working until June 16. In the end I can't complain because I have a bit more cash for my trip. I am also leaving on good terms and they will rehire me again if I decide to work there, just not in the same position as before. I don't think I will go back there though.

My work was really good to me when I left for 2 months last year. But I think it's just too hard to keep employees there! And I returned, so it wasn't like I left for a huge amount of time, just the summer. I can't imagine what I'd do if I planned on leaving for good! Good Luck Dio!

Good luck Jill! At the end of the day, you only answer to yourself. Screw everyone else. On the flipside, you should record your last few weeks on video. You could make a documentary...the Secret Lives of Travelers. It has to be more interesting then Dentists...eh?

Yeah, i'm in the same boat. I'm moving to America at the end of the year, so I'll have to quit my job of almost 4 years. I just signed on to a 6 month secondment to another section, so once that's up I'll be outta here!! My bosses have been great to me over the years in regards to travel - in 2005 they gave me 5 months off to travel!! But, it's time to move on. My bosses know I've had enough of the place, so I doubt they'll be terribly surprised.

im really luck with my current job, my boss hired me even though i said I'd be taking off for two months only 6months later, hes a bit of an aging hipsta whos been all over which helped! think he might get a bit crankier closer to tho, as at times hes suggested shifting my travel dates round to accomodate work which is a lil anal considering he has no idea how much work we'll have on...i dont even know what days im working next week!!!

#1 I want to work at Applebee's!!

#2 I hate my friggin' job, and I've got something in the works, but if it falls through, the moment it falls through, I'm quitting and working at a Starbucks (or some other retail giant) until I save enough money up to be a nomad.
