Default Where do I go this summer?!

Freespiritz has been in a dilemma for the past couple of months, watching the summer draw nearer and nearer and nearer and not knowing what to do with it.

HALP!

I’m set for June, thanks to the impulse roadtrip and two weeks of work back at college. But I have no idea where to go after, so maybe you guys can help me decide.

I initially thought I was going to go to Honduras and elsewhere around Central America, since I had a friend in Roatan who was going to host me for a week and show me around a little, let me take my baby steps in CA and all that jazz. BUT now she tells me she isn’t going to be around at all. So I have jitters kicking in about being alone in a foreign place, as I always do before a trip.

On other fronts, my parents can hook me up with a plane ticket back to Malaysia and set me up with volunteering for two months somewhere of my choice – Cambodia, Thailand, Sri Langka, working with World Vision to do media and writing stuff, and they’d pay for my ticket there too.

I was really looking forward to living the fine life (although with no money) on the road and just being out there on my own in Central America, although I’m always kind of scared of it too, and wandering through an area of the world that I’ve never been to. I’m sure it would make for some good stories.

Volunteering, however, would be free for me, and it’s something I’m definitely interested in doing at some point – especially since it’s media and writing-related. However, I’m not sure how ready I am to spend this summer working with people because I was so ready to be out on my own (read: wild and free), and my current lack of certainty may be inconveniencing others – something I’m not a fan of doing. I was also thinking of going home in December instead, and I don’t really want to go back twice in a year.

I’m just confused, but I need to buy a ticket somewhere soon before I end up homeless in Maine, which wasn’t where I intended to be homeless – if anyone has any other suggestions, fire away, I’m listening.

From what i can tell, you've done an absolute shite load of travelling, so Central America should be no worries at all for you. Central America was my first ever solo backpacking destination. I'll admit, it was a bit nerve racking at first, but it turned out to be a bloody beautiful place. I met HEAPS of people in the hostels, so you don't have to worry about being alone. I can honestly tell you that you would have absolutely nothing to worry about being a solo female traveller.

My advice - go to Central America. It sounds like you had your heart set on it and I think you will regret it if you don't go. Sometimes you've gotta jump in the deep end and have faith that you can swim.

um hello silly girl...You've just been all over S.E.A...I'm sure you can handle Central America! I went to Costa Rica alone. At first it was a bit daunting, but heck if this blonde solo non speaking espanol chica can make it so can you!! Trust me I only know how to say one word and it happens to be my favourite beverages!

And you must go and tell me all about the rest of Central America that I haven't explored..

Thanks for the reassurance guys. :D

I don't really think of traveling South East Asia as that much of a challenge beacuse I'm from south east asia, lol. I'm just glad to know that you guys have gone solo and rocked it! If you guys have any other advice on how to roll with it in Central America, do share - I'd love to know.

Uh...free ticket to Sri Lanka...? I'd be into that in a heartbeat!

That said, if you're kind of "SE Asia'd out", you can certainly handle Central America. I've been to all of them except Nicaragua, and all of them are friendly.

Good luck!

Yeah, the free aspect is freaking tempting, mike. I do want to go home this Christmas though, and I don't want my parents to pay for two tickets in a year...I know it'll still be valid next year though (the volunteer and paid-for flights), and if I volunteer next year I'll probably be able to be better-organized and get a grant from my college on top of the free tickets. Heh. I'm just being super indecisive about this, sigh.

I say go to Central America! Find some couchsurfing hosts to cut down on the expenses and have a ball!! I'm sure we can cross paths in Costa Rica or Honduras!!
