Default Travelling the world by sailboat.

When I was 15 I sailed around the Bahamas. That was fun, very interesting way to see the bahamas.

I want to travel more. Ive always thought about travelling by sailboat. (I think I would rather travel by land (hostelz etc.) but a sailboat is much cheaper and you can see alot of places).

Anyhow i have been reading things like this:

http://www.webmoxie.com/seawind/dream/index.htm

And I think that would be awesome. How much do around 40 - 50 foot boats cost?

Any of you wanna group up and sail the world? Anyone got a boat I can borrow? lol.

Seroiusly though, we should get a t-punk group to gether to sail the world!!

But anyhow what are your thoughts?

I agree that that would indeed be awesome. Crazy and awesome. I like the idea of a houseboat too. There's something cool about being able to completely uproot and leave a place, but bring your house with you. I guess kind of like a caravan or so. In one way you're more limited in the places you can visit by water, but on the other hand it would open up some pretty unusual, exciting opportunities.

I forgot what the sites are, but if you search around there are some sites where you can work on other peoples boats and hitch a ride while making a little money. I will see if I can remember them.

Your best bet with that a lot of times is going down by a main shipping area and almost hitchike your way on with someone. A lot of these guys are not checking sites to find help yadda yadda. A lot of em just kind of look at you when you ask and in their head say "I guess he doesn't look like he's going to slit my throat and toss me over..." and you can usually find people willing to take you for shorter trips more easily.

I did this for about two months down in the USVI with a ton of luck. Some people pay you, some just give you a ride, some expect you to work for them AND you to PAY THEM. It just depends on what you get.

A 50 - 60 footer is way more than you would need as well. They are nice, but then you need a full fledged crew to run it. You could get by plenty far on a 25 - 30 footer and set it up well enough to sail it solo if you wanted. It's just a matter of running the lines in a convienient way. There is no real "How much does a X footer cost" either. I mean, it depends widel on the boat. You can spend 3 grand on a 27 footer or 100 grand.

It's almost like asking "How much does a car cost?" without knowing if they mean a Pinto or a Ferrari.

You would fit in just perfectly with the fisherman at the end of the day.

With the size of the boat I was anticipating 2+ being on it. That and being on the sea for months, a decent sized boat would be nice, where you can get away from the sun etc. and not be too cramped.

I really have no idea what makes a good sailboat good, and a bad sailboat bad. I know a little of how to sail one. But, seeing as I live in COLORADO, I will not be sailing off to australia anytime soon. But it would be nice to some day do that, it would be amazing. And I would never want to do something like that myself. I mean I could...but weeks at a time on the ocean? Can you say ick? I spent 1 entire week on a boat, and wanted to go nutz! (it was because I never got off the boat). And yes, I could handle weeks travelling around. I know what it is like now, and yea I could handle it.

Anyhow, I did find a site that listed people who were going from here to there, and usually they wanted you to pay for your share of the food, and just to help and that was sufficient. I think that would be an AWESOME way of travelling, provided you had the time.

So when I get a sailboat in several years in the future, whose gonna go with me?? Gotta pitch in for the food, beerz and anything else you want!!

that would a-freaking-mazing. We did the Ohio river by boat once, going from where I lived in south eastern ohio on the river to Cincinnati. We had a nice lil speedboad with a room and a kitchen underneath. It was good shit. Always made me wanna travel the whole Mississippi with a boat like that, nothing but a bathing suit and several cases of beer. haha. Let us know how the boat thing works out!

theres a boat race every year and a millionaire lets you get a place on it for a price (the money goes to chaity) to go the whole way around the world is like 30k... there are worse ways to spend that kinda money! If only I was orginised enough to start fund raising for it!

I have a boat dream... I wanna be a pirate and run my own pirate themed cruise ship. In a brigantine.

It'll happen someday. I just need the downpayment for a 2 million dollar vessel...

So was I signed up as a wench, Jake? :D

And you know something, this forum needs some pirate emoticons. We can't have a ninja smiley if there isn't a pirate one!

I've had the exact same fantasy. Perhaps we could get a boat each, start a company then have battles between our ships.

Fantasy? FANTASY?

It's no fantasy my friend. It will happen.

So this pirate walks into a bar and orders a drink. The bartender notices the pirate has a steering wheel on the front of his pants, so he says "You know you got a steering wheel on your pants?" and the pirate says "YAR! It's driving me NUTS!"

yar har har....

That would be amazing! Maybe sometime in the future.
The only experience I have with sailboats are a couple friends who have them on the Great Lakes - Superior and Michigan. I think you can take a boat from there all the way out to the ocean and then the world!
