Default First time hosteling

What is the consensus on finding hostels on the move, and is having my sleeping bag connected to my pack going to get me into any trouble at any hostels in Europe or Asia? I was reading how some hostels worry about bugs traveling in sleeping bags.

Well, in some of the hotspots just walking into a hostel, especially during the sumer, might be tough. You might want to get a list of hostels in the general area where you think you might be then you can at least call them up a day or so ahead and save yourself some time from bobbing from place to place.

You can ask about the bag when you call too.

Try this hostel site, it's the best out there.

www.hostelz.com

It's an awsome site, very good info from personal reviews (I reviewed many myself), and there's a tiny city map in the corner that indicates where the hostel location is... its simply the best hostel site out there!

When sleeping in hostels, try to stay away from old wood and old walls... that is where bedbugs sleep .....

i got bedbugs in florence. they suck. the place was very shady and you probably couldn't locate it unless you experience the same bizarre series of events that brought me there so don't worry.

I never had to plan ahead for hostels in Europe, but then again I was there in the winter...a totally different ballgame. So basically what I'm saying has no bearing on this thread and I'm wasting your time. Now I'm wasting more of it. Why are you still reading! Stop!

That's what I did, I used the likes of hostelworld to get the names then went to there website, got the number and either phoned before I left or on the train there. Campsites are a great fallback should all else fail, they always seem to have room, your outside town but in a better position to find something in town the next day.

I think its smart to book at least a few days in advance when you can. I started my current trip without any plans or reservations, and its been good and bad at times. I've always found a place to stay, but not in the cool hostels. Most of the last week in Italy has been in cheap hotels. Im traveling with my brother now, so the price is about the same-- but you lose the fun hostel vibe that way.

I guess it goes without saying, but: Easter weekend in Rome without reservations =
