Default Unique to your country

alright so i was thinking about some random things that i've noticed are unique to canada (in my experience)

- cheddar cheese with apple pie
- Caesars!
- naming your dog molson (i've met 3 people in the past month with dogs named molson)

so what's unique to your country?

Hmm...seeing as how a particular Molson brew is my favorite beer, I might consider naming a dog Molson! (I'm American, BTW)...

I would say one thing that's unique to the United States is some of the cuisine...southern foods in particular, like collard greens, biscuits & gravy, chitlins, southern fried chicken, cornbread, etc.

Jess I agree with caesars!! I freakin love those drinks. Too bad the rest of the world hasn't caught on.

What about KD! Good ol' kraft dinner. I think canadians eat more of that stuff than any other country. mmm

I think Canada's general attitude towards hockey is definitely unique.

Plus has anyone been out to Newfoundland? Or the east coast in general? I don't think you could find anything like the Newfoundland culture anywhere else. It's like they took Irish culture, broke it down and rebuilt it...and added their own special qualities. Plus cod tongues. Who else serves cod tongues?

A lot of "uniquely" American things have sort of spread, so these are the closest:

Putting ice in your soft drinks
More or less consistently good customer service
Limited to non existent public transportation
24 Hour dining options
Widespread acceptance of credit cards

It has shamefully taken me HOURS to think of something unique about Australia... every Brit that goes there thinks it is so American, and every American thinks we're so British... when do we get to be our own country?!!!
But aside from being a country, we're also an island, and a continent. I think that's pretty awesome.
And I don't think anyone else has their country's national holiday on the anniversary of qhwn the first shipload of convicts arrived...
I love my stupid country!

My parents are actually from Australia and sadly I dont remember going when I was a youngster. The thing I think of when I think of OZ is, kangaroos, the out back, surfers paradise (mostly becasue thats where they are from) and deadly reptiles.

I grew up in Dallas Texas for us its:

Bar-B-Q
cowboy hats (even though not many people where them in Dallas)
Dallas Cowboy cheer leaders
Blond hair- more blond hair dye is sold in Dallas than anyother city in america,FYI
of course the Texas Accent (its not southern, its all in its own)
And "Remember the Alimo!" San Antonio
Budlight
Dr. Pepper Dublin Texas

I know Texas is not a country but some times I consider it one.

^^Well there are lots of americans on this site, and it is a big country, so it is interesting to hear about just one part of it, like Texas.
We have Aussie hats too- Acubras, the hats that outback people allegedly wear. Then the totally cliche touristy idea is that they have corks dangling off them (to keep flys away) but I have never seen anyone wearing that!!

I just noticed a typo in my other post. "qhwn" means when. It's an aussie thing.
Massacring the english language is indeed a nice aussie hobby.
Besides the token, g'day mate, we are also too lazy to say entire words:
Biscuit-bikkie
Australian-aussie
Barbecue-barbie
University-uni

Shit yeah! We say qhwn all the time down here.

I'll give a unique aussie list when I'm sober. Promise.

yea it was really hard growing up in Texas with Aussie parent which tought me how to talk. I got made fun of all the way up till 5th grade for my accent and diff words, especially since I was born in Texas and all. I gradually made myself speak texan which has all kinds of diff words as well. Then I realized in my later years the aussie accent would have got me lots of birds, but its kinda lost now and it kinda sounds like Im faking it if it slips out, even to me...... damn damn damn, and I dont think ladies over seas really find the texan accent as sexy as the girls do from other states in the U.S...

That's funny 2G. I grew up here too, but I've been told I don't have much of an accent. Of course, sometimes it helps to be a good ole' boy when dealing with certain kinds of people. I only speak Texan when I have to.

Malaysia...food. All sorts. Tasty. I'd say Manglish too, although I have ceased to partake in that for the most part.

Having a predominantly tri-racial multicultural society.

Trying to have the "biggest", "tallest", "longest" anything and everything...longest buffet line, anyone?

Maybe I'll think of more later.

Helz yea Lost in Texas you know what Im talking about with the good ol boy from Texas talkin, it does work in some cases. I dont have much of an accent at all, its a mix between my aussie side from the folks and my Texas talk from my friends and growing up here In DFW. Now that Ive been in and out of the military, and lived in Japan for a while, it switches to all kinds of wiered shit, one sentence will be Texan with some Aussie slang thrown in and well.............. Its all kinda off I think

ahhh, newfies. I was so choked by the newfie I met in Poland. I was traveling with an aussie bloke at the time and of course he tried to pay me out with the old "oot and aboot" sorta thing. I was like, well I'm from saskatchewan, thats more of an eastern thing. You should hear a newfie talk I says to him. Well, low and behold, we meet a newfie a few days later and he has NO NEWFIE ACCENT. I was choked. I was hopin for "I's de bie" and what not, but no such luck.

Another uniquely Canadian thing is how insane we are for Timmy's. I don't know if this still holds true, but up until about a year ago, we still had more Tim Hortons per capita than the states had Starbucks. At the same time I read that we also eat more doughnuts per capita than any other country. These two could be very closely related.

We have big things too! The big banana, the big merino(sheep), the big prawn...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia's_Big_Things

Also, unrelated but funny, we eat both the animals on our coat of arms-kangaroo and Emu.

Is kangaroo any good? How do you cook it? Do you "barbie" it?
