Irish win binge drinking league
A new survey on the drinking habits of all the EU nations has come out and shows Ireland tops the league for binge drinking followed by Finland in 2nd place and the UK in 3rd. Overall Europeans drink more than any other region. Although they say having more than 2.5 pints is binge drinking, which is nothing.

Is this really bad? Our government keeps telling us it's an embarrassment to the country and are clamping down on drink and pubs to the extent their almost killing off the pub trade in Ireland.
Ireland's famous for it's drinking culture, it's true to say we're practically a nation of alcoholics but I can't imagine it any other way. Going to the pub and getting absolutely warped drunk at the weekend is what we do. We go out to get drunk that's the whole point of drinkin,

They're definition of "binge drinking" is pretty weak. They say it's if you drink that much in "one sitting" so what constitutes a sitting? Is that for a whole night or just for a meal or what? If you drink 2.5 pints throughout a whole night (or even twice that, for that matter) you'll only stay buzzed at best. You'll be nowhere near the "stumble down the stairs, puke in the gutter" drunk that they like to associate with binge drinking.

Around here the standard for binge drinking is 4 drinks for women, 5 for men, over the course of a night, twice in a week or something. Its a weak definition.

We have that too but when they say drinks they mean units of alcohol a shot is one unit and a pint is two so that's where the 2.5 pints comes from.

That's one thing that I found interesting when I was in Irelland in the summer. On cans and bottles of beer (maybe this was just the stuff brought in from the UK, I'm not sure) next to the amount of liquid in the can, it said how many "units of alcohol" it contained, as well as the weekly amount of units to be consumed by men and women, respectively. And here at home, a pint of beer is just a pint of beer.

When I go out I rarely have more a beer in "one sitting" because I need to stand up to go back to the bar.
Yeah that was lame..... sorry
