Default favourite anthems

Basically, which national anthems would do you think are the most beautiful.
I happen to like the Danish, Swiss and Italian anthems as well as the German. I also like the Canadian but of course I am biased

I feel really sheltered and ignorant and blah but the only one I know is the American! I've heard the Brazilian and Canadian, but definitely not enough to be able to measure beauty of their composition.

The only anthem I really know is the Aussie one and I've gotta say - it's pretty ordinary. I don't know a single Australian that actually knows the words.

^ come on, everyone says that but I bet you do know them. I do. and if you're talking about the second verse, a lot of anthems have other verses that aren't usually sung.
it is a pretty boring anthem, but people do know the words - unless they were in primary school before 1974, then they would have learnt God Save the Queen. but they've had 35 years to catch up...
although the australian sporting community seems to have replaced it with waltzing matilda, which is ok by me!

I like this bit of god save the queen:
O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all.

I wish our anthem was more like a fight song... who cares how pretty the land is, what are we gonna do with our enemies?!

Nope, I really don't know the words. I can hum the tune and know the odd line here and there, but for the most part I've got nothing. I thought everyone was in the same boat...maybe it's just me

I feel far more pride when I hear Waltzing Matilda.

Aliz-I like the Australian anthem, it almost reminds me of the Canadian anthem in that its a celebration of our country and its freedom but not military might.

That was my guess too, but I'm getting a kick from the UK lyrics one.

Let's not forget "God Bless Amercia." If this song doesn't want to make you buy a little American flag and put it on your car window and drive through the streets honking your horn, I don't what will

Any anthem sang by a formula 1 car.

And this one should be the national anthem of somewhere.

Absolutely correct on that point, laura. She's got some serious singing chops .

And nic, I spent about 30 minutes watching her sing on youtube vids....That chick rocks! I almost had a lonely tear roll down my cheek as she was singing a song for a Japanese audience....awwwww...shit...I need to watch some football or do something manly tonight.

Shouldn't y'all be mad at Celine cause she's not singing like "God Bless Canadia" or something?

Yes, Tony, you should make sure you do something manly tonight; watch American Football, crush a beer can on your forehead, kill a small woodland creature, or something... cause getting all weepy like Nicole over Celine just isn't gonna cut it.

Oh... and I like the U.S. and I believe it was the Sweedish one... but I don't remember. I remember they had renditions of them on "Winter Games" for my C64.

Hahaha...I know, right? Growing a vajayjay watching Celine vids.

My only life support to US sports is via Youtube. It seems they've got soccer running 24hrs a day in Madrid and it's just not enough to get the testosterone pumping like watching the NFL (what's up with my Seahawks), NBA, UFC/MMA, etc...Shiyat.

Now.... where did I place that Titanic dvd?

I just sang the Aussie anthem to myself and I know about half of the words. It's just not something I've had to sing since I was 10. I'm sure there are others out there who don't know all the words to their anthem.
