Anybody else feel like this?
I have been daydreaming about this trip for a whole year- ever since last summer when I decided that I was going to Europe after finishing university. I had already been saving up for “some trip” but hadn’t decided what yet, so it may be even longer than that.

I’ve looking forward to this for soooooo long and leave in a month, done work in a mere 3 weeks. But I’m not excited anymore! This is supposed to be the fun part! I’ve been trying to get my sister and my friend to get excited with me but they didn’t have enough money so they didn’t want to get their hopes up. Both of them now have plane tickets but it’s too late- I just can’t get excited anymore. It feels like I’ve been dreaming about it so long that that’s all it is- I really don’t feel like I’m going to be getting on a plane and stepping off in Sarajevo in 4 weeks.

I’ve got most of my stuff covered except for my backpack and rail pass and a few clothes, so it’s not like I have tons of stuff to do so I’m stressed.

Help

It may be the calm before the storm. Maybe you should give yourself a week off from trip planning/thinking/preparing - watch cheesy movies with nothing to do with travel, drop the subject fast if it comes up in conversation and try to find something totally unrelated to keep you busy in your spare time. Read mysteries, go to a spa, take up gardening! Then, 10 days or a week prior, do all those last minute things, and maybe you'll be a bit more excited then. If not, I still wouldn't worry - being calm before a trip is kinda good, you're much less likely to forget stuff or check 6 times that you have your passport while you're driving to the airport. You'll be excited by the time you get off the plane, have no fear.

I know what you mean. I always feel like I should be excited, because I know once I'm back from travelling, I'll be wishing I could relive the days prior to a trip. I'm sure the excitement will return a few days before you leave. You coudl always just go out with friends that aren't travelling with you. I'm sure after a few, "I'm so jealous, I can't believe I'm stuck in Winnipeg all summer" comments you'll be ready and excited to get out of here! Oh and by the way, I am so jealous of you and all the other tpunks setting off on trips soon. I can't believe I'm spending the whole summer in Winnipeg!

Don't worry Hollz, when it hits it'll hit. When I planned my first trip I left myself only a week after school ended and I was so preoccupied with school I couldnt really get excited. But man, when I finally got to the airport I couldn't wipe the smile off my face, which was particularily bad because my mom was balling her eyes out hehe. Well ok, I managed to keep a straight face right up until I turned away from her then it was purely ear to ear. When it hits, it'll be so worthwhile....

lol I know how you feel, although my situations a bit different. I leave for Europe in a week, and have resigned from work. Everyone keeps asking me if I'm exited. Not only am I not exited, I'm terrified! I wake up during the night thinking what the hell have I done? Oh well, first time travelling nerves I guess.
I expect the real exitement will come for me when I get over the nervous anticipation, and start having fun on the trip.

A month is still a pretty long time, I wouldn't expect much exitement yet.
If your a few days into your trip and your still not exited, thats when I would start worrying.

i'm totally there. i've been dreaming of my trip coming up this august since i stepped off the plane back from belgium last fall. after a year of thinking about it and arranging financial aid/scholarships/plane tickets/visa/etc, i'm just rather neutral about the whole thing. content to be leaving, but certainly not brimming with anticipation. hopefully it'll hit sooner than later.

Personally I find that when i've been giving the same old tired responses to the same old questions about where i am going this summer, i tend to lose any excitement and sometimes even feel ambivalent towards the whole project.

Like you said, at first you're really excited, but then you kind of tire of it being the only thing you care about.....but lets face it, nobody travels because of the excitement before they travel, just as nobody rides fairground rides for the excitement of standing in the queue. Once you begin the adventure its impossible to stay dispassionate and neutral, just as once your on the ride its impossible not to laugh or cry. You're gonna love livin europe, not just cause its a great place, but because every part of your routine will be a welcome break from the norm, and there is no better spiritual feeling than the self sufficiency of the soul that travel gives you.

sorry i can feel that ive started to rant and i really should be trying to help you. Good luck mate, everything will make sense when that jet engine roars.......

My trip is 8 days away, and im not feeling excited yet either. I think its because ive had loads of other things to do the last few weeks, with friends visiting and work.

The problem is im not feeling motivated to get anything done either!

as always, thanks for the comments and advice! I can anticipate that at the airport, while i'm saying goodbye to my parents, little sister, and boyfriend just before the frosted security glass/gates, my sister and I will be all sad and probably crying. And then we'll step behind that glass and as soon as we're out of sight we'll just start jumping up and down with excitement. Ok, maybe after the security part we'll do that, but yeah. I watched my friend disappear behind that glass to go to china and I wanted to do that so bad!

I'm curious. . . am I the only one that thinks outside the box? Yes I am! well yeah it has happened to me but it's cause I get stuff thrown at me and I get more excited over other places and I have to like be very careful and I'm changing my scheduele all the time, like right now that I'm in CT I was supossed to be in Washington (for no real reason) and then Maryland. . . Either way I'm stuck here and I'll make the best out of it! oh but yeah the thing is if you think about something way to much than you start to get bored of the idea cause you have already thought about everything you are gonna do in the place, so once again the X element goes away and it's all ahh ok. but once you get there just have fun and do whatever, you shall have an even better time! hahaha! :greenguy:

I definitely know how you feel...last year I went on a short term study abroad trip to London the friday after our finals week ended. Basically, we took a class all of our first quarter and then we went to london for 10 days. I was looking forward to this for sooo long, but after studying for finals for what seemed like forever, it was hard to be excited about packing for 10 days in London an hour after my last one...I basically almost e-mailed my professor to tell them I wasn't going because it just seemed like too much work. My advise would be to kinda take a break for a bit, and really, just stick it out...it's hard for a bit, but it's sooo worth it when you're there.
