tamara, what would these boards be without you. you're posts always make total sense and inspire.

voyd, of coarse the rules change as people change. that's the beauty of relationships i guess. it's always becoming something new and people change everyday. it's never going to be the same as it used to be...and why would you want it to be? personally, i notice how someone looks for like the first week i know them and then i see them as representations of the person i've come to know. i mean, someone that is 'ugly' could be the most beautiful person...i honestly just don't notice past the initial meeting. one of my best friends has a hair lip and someone asked about it one time and i had to stop and think...who, mike?...oh, oh yeah...i guess he does... and i'm never really attracted to a guy by the way he looks, it's always been a kind act or nature that got my attention. my ex was this grungy guitar player in my art appreciation class in college that just f*cked around in class...not really an eye catcher in my book. but then i heard that when my class took a trip to the art museum in chicago and no one would give this kind of wierd guy in our class a ride home, matt had offered without bating an eye. i asked him out the next week. and in starbucks, i never check out all the so called "hotties", but the guy the holds a door, or makes eye contact and says thankyou...or that you can tell is genuine in his words and actions...suddenly becomes the hotest guy in the room to me. i dunno...just me i guess. looks wise, anthon was totally not my type, but now, i think he's the most beautiful man on earth.

---->julia, oh, i didn't mention anthon and i stopped by to spy on you....we're just creepy like that.

My God, thats uncalled for. What a bitch! I'd like to track her ass down and beat her with my spiked track shoes. Who does that??

Another sad story related to this one - I don't have the web site, but I guess a sick sob has a business where he puts bosnia (spelling?) kittens into small glass bottles and corks them in with a tiny air hole to sell off. Yes, eventually they do die...

Its really disgusting what some people do. Not to mention depressing...

Ok, let's say that whatever initially attracted you to this person...whether it be looks, personality, talent, a combination...changed. Maybe he started out being a very charitable person - but after getting hustled one too many times - flip-flopped to becoming more guarded.

Or...he never changed...but YOU did - and what you initially found attractive, now you didn't. Let's say YOU were the one who became more guarded and came to see his blind charity as naive and enabling. Or his musical pipe dreams as unrealistic and a childish waste of time that kept him from holding down a real job.

It's like buying a sports car that later morphs into a minivan - or never does. Sometimes that's good, sometimes that's bad.

I think that's the tough part of LTRs - maintaining that congruency with someone when both may or may not change on various issues - as is natural with aging. I mean, passing my 30s, I can say I've finally turned a corner in life. I am now more apt to be bothered by loud neighbors up late...than bothering neighbors by being loud late! I am now...officially OLD!

Agreed. I think the main reason relationships don't work is because people fall out of love for those reasons. You grow, you change, you become different people. Jake and I have gone through many of our formative years together and have always managed to grow and change with each other instead of against each other. I will definitely say that we are both VERY VERY different from when we first got together, but our changes have been very compatible.

^ That right there is the primary key to most long-lasting, healthy relationships. I think.

I think it's always really nice to hear of couples who have changed so much individually, but their relationships has gone from strength to strength over time.

My first serious boyfriend and I both changed a lot while we were together, and ended up really not getting on that well. Once we split up, we realised that we were much better as friends.

But my current boyfriend and I have been together for over 2 years, and we're still going strong, despite changing a lot, so it gives me hope seeing that other people have managed it!
