I'm planning a trip to Greece for about two weeks in September. I'd like to spend a few days in Athens, and then go to some of the islands...but there are just so many that seem beautiful and appealing that I am having trouble narrowing down my trip. I'm more into relaxing on the beach and chilling out than partying (though I am not adverse to a little party now and then...). Any suggestions/ideas/tips/favorites? I'm definitly considering the more popular destinations: mykonos, corfu, santorini but other ideas would be much appreciated, especially places that are good for solo travellers. thanks!!

Our trip to Greece focused on the Pelopponese, so can't help you with the islands, but if you do want to check out that part of the country, Nafplio is a good central base - it's a nice city in itself, and it's got good bus links to many other towns on the peninsula - Argos, Epidavros, Corinth/Arcocorinth and a bunch of other places.

Each island has its own character and personality. Maybe get a guidebook on the Greek Islands and at least read the "highlights" section of each particular one. For example, Rhodes has a lot of history, Mykonos is a party island (I hear -- haven't been there), there's tons to do and see on Crete since its so large, Santorini is known for its dramatic scenery, and so on. Pick out what sounds best to you and research some more, then make your decision.

I would say in a 2 weeks you should be able to see at least four islands without hurrying. Most of the ferries are overnight ones, and budget it as your "hotel room" for the night. Of course, you may have a tougher time of it going from island to island, as lots will likely go to Athens and back...

When in Athens, stay in the Plaka district -- it's close to the sights and has all the amenities you'll need as a traveler.

I enjoyed Kos a lot when a went a few years back. I didn't think it was quite as touristy as Corfu, but that may have changed now... not too sure! Anyway, wherever you go, you're bound to have a great time!
