To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't do it abroad... at least not somewhere where I don't speak the language. If you speak good Spanish and feel you'd be able to communicate well enough to tell them exactly what you want, and also able to tell them if they're doing something different to how you want it, then go ahead!
Providing you feel comfortable in the place and don't feel put off by the employees or anything you see them do, then go with your instinct.
I've not had any experience of being tattooed abroad, only at home in England, and I have to say, at one place I felt uncomfortable with the tattooist and found it hard to communicate to him exactly what I wanted, and he was English!
Find someone who you'd really be happy to do the tattoo on you. Don't settle for second best! You can always leave the studio and find somewhere else (though preferably not halfway through your tattoo, haha).

i would never get a tattoo in another country or on the road (or place I couldn't get to eeasily). here's why:
1. language. do you speak the language well enough to understand the artist? to be ablle to say "no, I don't want you to put a unicorn on my arm" before he/she does it?
2. hygiene. standards may be different (or non existant). nothing says "I got tattoed in a foreign country" like hepetitis.
3. after care. I can't imagine slugging a backpack around while caring for a tattoo. not too mention that backpacking can = not showering for a few days which = not cleaning tattoo which = bad news.
4. most artists offer free touch ups and fixes should the tattoo fade over time. kind if difficult to do that if its a foreign country.
If you do go ahead with this, make sure you're well researched.

The only people I know who get tattooed in foreign countries (besides soldiers) are ink enthusiasts who'll do it at a tattoo convention... That way they can get a world-renowned artist to do the work on the spot. I met some guys who happened to be in Germany when some kick-ass Japanese artist was there, and never having the funds to go to Japan, had their work done there by the guy. I think in a situation like that, it's a good idea, but otherwise I wouldn't for the reasons already listed above.

my ex boyfriend got a tattoo while in europe. though we had broken up by that time and i had hoped it would turn out crappy, it looked good when i saw it. but maybe he has a disease... whoops, i didn't mean to write that part.
