so i did it...spent a year saving up and i just bought my tickets and insurance and HI card and student card for europe this summer... theres no turning back now!! im flying into london and end of may and out of rome end of july...

i have been to europe in the fall and winter for a few months...but im getting nervous about summer travel....ive heard horror stories of no hostels, crazy hot packed trains and just that travel all around is wayyy more difficult than in the off season....well i expected that...but im wondering if anyone has any good tips that might save my ass when im getting all ready to go....where do u recommend i book hostels ahead and where is it not necessary....is there room to roam europe or do i actually have to plan out my trip this time...

my vague plan is start in london...then down through france on the trains....italy and definetly all over southern italy...then over to the greek isles (does anyone recommend i go to the mainland or should i just head straight for the islands like i planned to?).... i have 63 days to plan...so help me out guys!!! any suggestions, tips, places to see...things to avoid...stories...whatever! im counting on all of you to help make this trip unforgettable....

(im also open to suggestions to change my route around....all i know is i get into london and i gotta be able to get back to rome by july 24th)

**and im bringing $3500 (not including plane and rail and all that).....is that enough? also...any tips on packing..im struggling at the thought of that right now....whats the weather like in the summer for travelling around?

thanks so much guys...i appreciate any and all advice!!!!

Those 63 days are going to go by SO QUICKLY, but it's still plenty of time to plan.. just don't overplan. A long trip like that, especially in a place as easy to get around as Europe, is ripe with opportunity for spontaneous stuff.

On the opposite side, there are some places that will be crazy packed, as you mentioned. Not sure if you're only going to only the countries you stated, but I'd definitely book ahead, at least the first night or two, for places like Amsterdam, Paris and Barcelona, which seem to have a low hostel-to-backpacker ratio. Especially in the summer.

Well, I've never been to mainland Greece, but I can highly recommend the islands. I've been to a few, and they were great. Kos is especially nice, I had a lovely time when I went there a couple of years back. You can get boat trips to Bodrum in Turkey, which is cool, you get to haggle with all the pervy men in the markets!

As for what to pack, if you're getting into London in May, I would suggest you should be prepared for any kind of weather! Hopefully it will be starting to get warmer, but unfortunately, you never know. It might be worth bringing something a bit warmer. If it rains, you can always buy an umbrella while you're over here.

Places like Greece and Italy will probably be really hot around early-mid summer, so be prepared for that, with sunscreen, etc.
