Well I imagine it would be quite a bonding experience for mother and daughter to check out the red light district!

Seriously though, I have never been to Amsterdam myself so I am not much help. But I have travelled with my mom and a vacation together always makes us closer! So have fun....

Take her to out for a smoke and then share a booth. It will be a good experience. It was for my mom and me.

Heineken tour for the beer! Takes about and hour and you get 3 beers and a glass at the end. Its worth it.

Sights you may wish to see on foot include Dam Square and Vondelpark (the biggest city park which quite often has performers) I guess you could go on a canal tour too.

I've never been to A-Dam, but I did do England/Ireland/Scotland with my mom, and it was amazing! We're close, but it was still a great trip, and there was nothing weird about going into a pub with her, and stuff like that! Have fun!

Do go down the red light district! Why wouldn't ye. You can't do Amsterdam without seeing the red light. You've nothing to worry about all the ladys of the night are locked in their windows so their not roaming free like the drug dealers and you can avoid them by ignoring the goastly wispers they make.

The Heineken tour is alright, I never did any of the canal tours but I'd say they could be good.

I recommend doing a bike tour of the city, or better yet, the countryside. First off, you get off the main tourist track, secondly, it's a great way to see everything - the way the locals do! Riding around and dodging trams on a single-speed cruiser gives you an experience folks in Amsterdam get every day, and then breaking out into the gorgeous countryside and riding along a dike on the sea is memorable, and not too tiring since the whole country's flat as a pannekoek. I took Yellowbike.nl - reasonably cheap, good bikes, they provide a rain poncho, and the guides are awesome.

Its probably too late now . . . . but if not, I highly recommend Mike's Bike Tours. Comedian guides, extremely knowledgable, most of its within the city but you'll go out a bit too. It was incredible. Do it at the beginning of your time there so you have time to go back and check out the sites you see.

Mike's is in Munich too BTW, another great tour (although the tour guide won't smoke ya out like in Amsterdam).

There's a Mike's Bikes in Barcelona, as well.. great stuff. Actually, I think they split off and renamed it Fat Tire or something like that, but just as good nonetheless.

I think the Mike's Bikes and Fat Tire companies are seperate, but their staff is pretty well connected.

I've done the Fat Tire tour in Berlin, another incredible trip.

I'm leaving on my first european adventure next month. One portion of my trip is entirely solo: 10 days in 3 cities: Prague, Amsterdam and Berlin. As soon as I get in and situated at my hotel / hostel, I plan on finding a bike to rent and do all 3 days like that.

Aww, Amsterdam.. Don't get me started, it's my favorite city that I've been too. There is so much to do there, and not enough to do it. Go down to Leidseplein, Anne Frank Huis, Hard Rock, boat tours, bike tours, it's a city with more museums per square meter than any other in the world and absolutely fabulous. If she's liberal enough go to a coffee shop and light it up, it's so much fun. =D And then go to the Van Gogh museum. Maybe go to den Haag for a few hours, it's not that great but worth the 10 euro trip.
I miss the Netherlands...
