ok, so i'm in rome right now and i think i remember hearing that theres supposed to be a pretty good pub crawl here. my hostel (yellow hostel) offers one, but i thought that there was supposed to be a really good one that started by the spanish steps? can anybody confirm this? also, i was thinking of making my next stop the cinque terre. what town has a train station and would be the easiest to make my base for exploring the area for a few days? also any recommendations on specific places to stay would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

They all have at least train stops. All of them would be lovely to stay in, but if you want to walk from one end to the other it might be best to stay at one of the end ones: Monterroso or Riomaggiore. Monterroso is the largest, and probably easiest to find accomodation, although some people have said otherwise. I just went to the first wine shop I saw and asked the owner if he knew of anywhere to stay. He called a buddy and I slept in his living room for 20 euro a night. Not too cheap but it was pretty cool. Real nice artisty type of guy with a family who just needed some extra dough.

By the way, I love your avatar.

Yeah Monterosso is probably your best bet, but there is a hostel in the town starting with V, one over from Monterosso. Monterosso has no hostels only hotels.

and how bout the pub crawl thing? anybody know? the hostel has some sorta thing tonight with a one hour open bar at a pub down the street for 15 euro, and i think they do a couple pubs after that with a free shot at each. one of the guys at the hostel recommend riomaggiore and a place to stay there for pretty cheap. anyway, thanks for the help, i'll probly try looking around monterossa. and yes, borat rules the world and owns my heart, chenque.

Hi!
Pub crawl: Heard good things about Spanish Steps, but by the time I thought about going I was facing a long, early day of traveling the next day. The guys in my room that came in in the early morning and were passed out when I woke up a few hours later looked like they had fun!

Cinque Terre: I stayed in Riomaggiore in a place called "La Dolce Vida" it was 20 or 25 euros, but that was for 2 people. More than I liked to pay, but a gorgeous little apartment with a beautiful view! And such a great town, with the best gelati in Italy in my opinion.

another question, is it worth going to naples for a couple days to see pompeii? i've heard the train is really cheap and not overly long, but naples is supposedly pretty shady and i am alone. is there much to see in naples itself? or is the big draw just pompeii and mt. vesuvius (sp)?

Yeah, probably not worth going to Naples. Its dirty and crime ridden. And although pizza was invented there, I found it highly disappointing the three seperate times I tried it. You dont have to stop there to go to Pompeii, you can stop at Pompeii on the way to Sorrento from Rome I think. Stop for a few hours and see it then go on to Sorrento.

Pompeii is definately worth checking out, it has some of the better ruins i have seen, very photogenic. As for Naples, i only stopped there for a little while to try a pizza, the place didn't look that exciting, but the pizza was the best i have ever had!!

i'm not that down with european pizza. i like the thick americna style pizza WAY more. but doesn't look like i'll be heading down, only up me thinks. anyways, tried both pub crawls, only problem is that its american spring break right now so they were chalk full of yanks. which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but last night at the spanish steps one, there were 46 americans, 1 canadian (me), 1 german, and one scot. thats it. anyway, the one from my hostel, rome(ing) tours, was good, like 35 people, again mostly american, but there was too many people for the 1 hr open bar at this little pub. so you couldn't get your money's worth. where at the spanish steps one (by i think rome's famous tours???) um we all stood outside by the steps and drank flats of beer and jugs of wine, so nobody went thirsty. and they also had drinking games for free drinks and stuff, so it was fun. plus since i was the only canuck, i was a superstar. hahah, wearing my pink ciao bella coca cola shirt. damn rights. ahhhhhhh, good times, good times. so the spanish steps one gets my vote. as long as its not too cold out, or raining. anyway thats my rant. yellow hostel RULES!!! maybe i'll just stay another week?

Pub crawls vary enormously. It really depends where you are. Some times they're only 10 euro but that doesn't include any drinks; other times they're 20 & up but inclulde several drinks; some are more.

It depends on how much you want to ingest, really!!

both of these were 15 euro, which included one hour open bar to start off with, 1 shot at each pub (not pure alcohol, a concoction with fruit juice), and cheaper drinks than normal at the pubs (like 2 euro cheaper on average i think), so if you can get a good head start in the first hour, its sorta worth it, esp the one that gave away free beer for drinking contests.

I think I went on that Famous Tours one in Rome. It was fun, but I think I remember there being tons of Americans too. Shows you some of the sites too which is cool. Best pub crawl ever though is the one in Barcelona at the Travellers bar. Totally crazy.

Yeah, I "went" on the spanish steps pub crawl too...well sort of. We kind of opted out of the crawl and went to a bar instead to play pool and after a couple games the pub crawl just showed up at the bar we were at and we just ended up hitching a ride with them. There were just so many people there that they totally didnt notice the extras. It was fun, but the shots were juice...

I went on one of the Munich pub crawls with a couple of buddies. It was alright because the first hour was all-you-can-drink beer. Granted it was shitty beer, but it was all-you-can-drink. The shots in between bars were pure juice too, though. We all had TONS of them, but one of my buddies had seventeen of them (yes he kept count) on top of the six or seven beers we each had before and we were all still alive and generally only tipsy by the end of the night. Juice sucks when you want booze.

so i have now extended my stay in rome at the yellow hostel for the THIRD FREAKING TIME! I just can't seem to leave this place. well, and i have been too busy partying to see the vatican yet, and i'm not leaving rome till i see that for sure. oh and now, i might be able to stay for a couple months and work for that spanish steps pub crawl. how wicked would that be. and i'd probly get a flat with a guy from this hostel who is getting a job with a rival pub crawl. would be good times, good times. well, heres to hoping, he wrote me back an email and said to meet him at the steps when they start the crawl or call him, so i'll probly go see him tonight or tomorrow. good luck to me. rome for a couple months would be excellent.
