So I read somewhere that in August much of Europe goes traveling themselves. Because of this, there is alot more closed than other summer months. Is this true? And if so, does it make a big differnce?

I've only been in Europe in June and July but I think most places would still be open. I'm sure another member can expand on this a little more.

Yeah, August is peak travel season, so all the major spots will have tons of tourists, groups, etc. If you're going to be overseas then, and can't jockey your trip around to a "shoulder season," I'd recommend picking an off the beaten track kind of route. Don't do the London-Paris-Rome thing, but pick places in those countries that sound really cool to you, but aren't on the Big Tour.

Rome is PACKED in late July and August. I can't really say anything about the rest of Europe, but in Italy in August, you should check out smaller off the beaten path places (as previously mentioned). Hit the countryside. Umbria and Tuscany are beautiful (but can be hot). Perugia was not very crowded when I was there and it was really fun. If you can, make it to the Umbria Jazz festival there. Not sure when it is, but I think it was in late July of early August. Word on the street is that clapton will be playing there 2006...
(i know clapton doesn't play violin but is as close to a guitar as i could get)

Yeah, they say you won't meet a single French person in Paris in August. Most tourist things are open, catering to all the tourists from everywhere else. What might be closed are the family businesses if the proprietors are vacationing. Maybe the odd restaurant here and there. Definitely try to book accommodations in advance!

Europeans tend to travel in Europe for the most part, It's really only the Irish that go to America in their droves because we all have relations over there.
