My 21st is comming up, on December 23rd to be exact, and i'm looking at going somewhere with a few mates purely to get drunk and have a good time. As it's during the Christmas holidays most flights are stupidly expensive, but Ryanair have some reasonable prices on the Dublin route. So really my question is, what's the city like for partying at this time of year? Would there be many backpackers in the hostels? Can you recommend anywhere to go? And I'd have to go for at least 4 days to get a reasonable price, so is there plenty to do during the day?

Oh My God!!! You are going to have the best Birthday ever!!!! Dublin is the best place to party. You should drink around Temple Bar... Its right in the city centre so if you don't find a pub or club you like its really easy to get to lots of other lively places in Dublin. I don't know about hostels and that as I live in Dublin but the night life is excellent especially around Christmas....
P.S. Happy Birthday on the 23rd!!!

Dublin is a BLAST around Christmas time.. Just be warned that many places - including pubs and hostel front desks - may be closed during the day on the 25th and 26th. Otherwise, have at it - you're going to have an amazing time. The people are fantastic.

Also, look into doing the Backpackers Pub Crawl - the group will be much smaller around that time, which means you'll probably end up with more drinks. Believe me, there will be a LOT. The guy who runs it is really cool and will show you lots of great places to party, so do it early on in your trip. The Literary Pub Crawl is great too, but not so much of a boozefest as it is entertaining.

I was looking at going from the 20th to the 24th, I would like to be home for Christmas with my family. It works out quite well as my birthday is on a Friday this year.

I am slightly concerned that I've heard it's become very expensive for a night out, with a ban on happy hours and price rises after changing to the euro. Can anyone give me an insight into the cost of a pint? Or getting into a club?

Last I remember, pints were around 3.50€, and cover charges about 5€. The nice thing is drink prices are posted in all bars so the bartenders can't screw you... Temple Bar, while the hub of it all, is pretty pricey, FYI... Again, that's why I recommend the backpacker pub crawl - a lot of drinks are included

Alot of people will be off so the city will be packed and Irish are bad for jacking up prices in that situation. We pay around €3.30 a pint in my small town and I think I payed €3.90 for a pint of Guniess in Dublin when I got back from my trip.

I hate Dublin by the way. I'd say go to Galway shaft, no one can argue Dublins better than Galway.

I think it's 10 or 15 €, so it's pretty worthwhile. Actually, the guy who runs it waived our fee that night, since it was Christmas week and there were only like 8 of us... Still got all our free drinks and everything, too!
