My paternal great grandparents were born as Irish citizens (not sure if they kept their Irish citizenship). I read that you can only get citizenship from your parents or grandparents. So here is my ? for anyone who has experience with this: If my dad got Irish citizenship from his grandparents (his grandmother is still alive if that matters) could I then in turn apply for it through him? And then if he wanted to renounce his citizenship, could I still keep mine?

Hey,
As far as I know you can claim Irish citizenship if a parent or grandparent was born in Ireland. If you go onto foreignaffairs.gov.ie you should find out everything you need to know, if you can't find out anything they'll point you in the right direction...
Hope this helps....

Lizz, theoretically it could work but it may require extended living periods in Ireland. You should do some research on it and show it to your dad. Every country is different, some require current citizenship of the parent/grandparent in question, others don't. It's worth looking into at least!

When I applied for British citizenship, simply because my father was born in Northern Ireland, despite the fact that he is now a Canadian citizen and has been for fifty years, I was able to get it. However, had it been my mother, I would not have. Now, I may be wrong about this, but I was told that Irish citizenship, unlike British citizenship, is maternal. Therefore, your mamma would have to be Irish. Your best bet is simply to call the Irish embassy and ask them. It's takes a long time, though, so if you're planning something soon, hop to it! =)

I've looked into this issue quite a bit.
Apparently, AFAIK, if your paternal grandparent(s) were born there, and you can prove this, you are entitled to become an Irish citizen. For me, my dad would have to, then I could become one since my great-grandmother was born there.

I don't understand any of this... How come you can't just go there and say "Hi, I wanna be a citizen of Ireland... These are my reasons" Go through a nationalisation programme like they have here in the U.S.A and then Be Irish...? It just doesn't make any since to me...
