Hello,
I'm 23, a girl, and travelling alone on my first big backpacking trip. I was wondering what Greek islands you would recommend. I LOVE beaches, ruins and want some beautiful scenery, but am on a budget (as is everyone I guess). Any advice would be great, plus the cheapest way to go island hopping (are the ferries in my guidebook the only/cheapest ways?) and some cheap hostels (how about sleeping on the beach...... Ilegal?) Any advice is appreciated!

Hi there, welcome!

I don't know much about the Greek Islands but I have to say I'm jealous as all hell. A lot of people like to go to Corfu (and more specifically to the Pink Palace hostel). And there are a couple of other people who swear by Santorini and its neighboring islands.

I'd suggest getting a good guide book catering *specifically* to the islands if that's what you want to focus your trip on. Lonely Planet makes a decent one but check out all of the different guides available to see what looks good to you. And TRY to always get a guide (for no matter what city/country) that's been published within one year-- no more than that.

Welcome

I always here good things about Crete, especially for the things you mentioned.

As far as camping on the beach - I lived in and around Malt afor 5 years - camping on beaches is seems to always be possible - many place don't allow it, so check into that. Even places that don't allow camping are not necessarily going to inforce that.

i spent 2 weeks on the greek islands in july, 05. had my birthday in ios, the party island- totally awesome. stayed at the farout beach village, doghouse tents from 7 euro pp.
mykonos is amazing. paros is great, make sure you visit the punda beach club. santorini is beautiful, has a red sand beach, black sand beach and white beaches. watch the sunset with the locals at oia, you can catch the bus there.
naxos has the most incredible white beach with the clearest waters.
make sure you visit in the summer months as everything shuts in winter. accomodation prices raise as it gets hotter. book in advance to avoid missing out.
ferries are quite cheap, usually under 20 euro for a trip, but they are always always late.
greece is amazing, im in love with the place

Kefalonia (home of captain corelli's madolin)
Rhodes (if you avoid falaraki, although i have been there 3 times for wild parties with the girls, Lindos is very pretty though)

Athens is gorgeous!! I love greek ruins, greek history in general, and although it has been a while I have really good memories... specialy of the views... the Parthenon..the greek guards, the FOOD!

Too bad we couldnt go to any of the islands becaus ethat week they had this massive harbour strike, no boats wold leave... :greenguy: but we managed to go to the Peloponnese as well...absolutely beautiful too.. specially the Temple of Poseidon (the sea's god) which is just by this amazing cliff that plunges right into the sea... the tours usually go at sunset because there's this unbelievable view....

Oh well... all Greece is beautiful. But Athens was great cause it had really ancient history convined with everyday city life
