Any cafe there will have what you are looking for, especially in the RedLight District.
Not sure about smoking weed in the streets, but surely in every cafe you can since they sell weed in just about all of them. Brownies too.
Imagine a booth in the corner with shelves in the background and plastic containers with different labels showing you what kind of weed or hash is in each. A kid in the candy store.
Have a good time!

Now, I don't partake, but just out of curiosity, would it be "permissible" to your employer in the US where pot is illegal to smoke pot in a country where it IS legal? I mean, are employers here basically just enforcing federal law, or is it just their own internal independent regulation that would still exist, federal policy or not?
In other words, if you failed a whiz quiz, could you just say, "Yeah, i smoked pot, but it was in Amsterdam whre it was legal." Would that get you off the hook?

Oooooo.....Things that make you go -hmmmmmm? Good question, but it´s more than likely that no excuse will get you off the hook <_<
I did work at a company for 3 1/2 years and they never did any random or scheduled whiz quizzes in that time, but I did have to take one before getting the job. Is that normal?

Just for the record, pot is NOT legal in Amsterdam, its tolerated, so if a tourist is walking down the road like a cool guy, smoking a honk'n fatty, I would say you would be busted for shizzle!! Just keep it in the shops, it will keep ya out'a trouble. B)

not to promote another travel page - but this girls amsterdam page is really great.
she's a little chubby so i want to trust her restaurant suggestions too.
she goes into which coffeeshops are best, what pot/hash is best at each spot.
i plan to use her suggestions in october!!

well, since this seems like a pretty tight knit e-community, i would feel rude not to introduce myself:
and what better place to introduce myself than the pot board -
i'm a 22 year old secretary (blah!), i'm lucky that my job allows for me to cruise the net searching for travel tips, etc. i live and have lived in san diego, california for the past 22 years and my travel resume is as follows:
switzerland - 11 years old, solo trip - rather...exchange? - one month
indonesia - 15 years old - 45 days
i am ashamed to admit that it's been 7 years since i've been out of the country.
hoping to see next:
india
cambodia/laos
new zealand

JOA, you´re actually at a perfect age to be traveling! Many of my friends are in their mid-30's and haven´t crossed an ocean yet. DOMESTICATED :D
I am glad to hear that you´re not just talking about it, you´re going to do it! That takes guts, my friend
You chose some very unique countries to put on your to-do-list. Kudos! A brave soul you are, indeed. Is that why you chose the name "joanofarc?" It makes total sense B)
...and hey, if you want to participate in the topless section(like Dio's thinking about doing ). Volunteers welcome :D Hey, what can I say! It´s a tight community

Marajuana and hashish is still technically "illegal" in the Netherlands and it would be frowned upon to walk around the streets blowing reefers. Most locals would certainly find this offensive.
One of the better coffeeshops I have had the pleasure of visiting is called The Bush Doctor. It is maybe a 10 minute walk from Central Station although I don't remember the name of the street. Any of the local "head" pamphlets would have an address.
Quality of the smoke there is first-rate! Happy Toking !!
