I am going on a cruise with my best friend and her family...

at the time she invited me to go along... , i was pretty excited... but i am paying my own way... and am starting to feel like this is just going to be a huge expense for me, and am dealing with bitterness issues because her parents will be paying for everything for her, and if i try to save money by not doing everything... she's going to be resentful if she has to curtail her own things that her parents would pay for.... when i am paying for EVERYTHING on my own

anyways, to get to the point

We're going to be stopping at 7 "ports" for the cruise, and I just dont know if there's any way to get to the cities on our own, or if we're goign to need to do a "shore excursion" to get anywhere...

I guess La Havre is the port for when we go to Paris... but is there any way to get to the city without going through the cruise line... and what does it cost?? I had no idea its 3 hours by motorcoach from the port to Paris...

The other ports we're going to be landing at are as follows... and does anybody know i should just suck it up, or if we'd be able to do things on our own without going through Princess...

Dublin.... port for dublin
Greenock.... glasgow
Bergen.... bergen
Rotterdam.... amsterdam?
Zeebrugge.... bruges or brussels or flanders...

you could always go to caen instead of paris, caen is beautiful.

Check out some Lonely Planet, Let's Go, etc., guidebooks, especially the "Arriving By..." sections. They should have hints for getting around for those arriving by ship.

Also, with a large group, taxis should be quite affordable per person. Or even renting a car. That is a way to use the friend's family situation to HELP you...

And finally, I never take the cruise's pre-packaged excursions. In my week southern Caribbean one (St. Thomas, Guadeloupe, Grenada, St. Lucia, Dominican Rep, Puerto Rico), I made all my own arrangements upon arrival with local taxis and such. Same with the Baltic cruise to Sweden, Estonia, St. Petersburg, Finland. Cruise excursions are a rip-off, by and large.

Good luck, and feel free to ask specific questions...

Yes, in a situation like that you'll have lots of chances to use the secret art of Mooching!! But really if you're invited along with the family you should be able to score a ride by whatever means of transport they're using!

Just find a cab to take you away from all the tourist traps at the ports! I don't know what sort of cruise you'll be on, but usually the stops are relatively short, so you'll want to maximize your time. If it's a good line, they'll give you a guide/map every night before your stops so you can plan to go and do stuff on your own...
