Guys...

For those of you who have been to the uk, or live in the uk, can you give me an idea on a town within about 1-2hrs of london (with good transport links to london) and with a good/cheap hostel.

I want to kill a week before oktoberfest, and want to get out in the country and get out of london for a bit.

Also whilst on the topic of uk, any towns/sites people have checked out in greater england (south west and north) and wales worth visiting?

Any ideas will be much appreciated.

Lee.

heh lee there are great places that you can visit from london which have close links, essex although i imagine you have seen a bit of this already!!! You could try bristol and bath which is in the west country which will also allow you to explore cardiff and south wales! For a cheap transport link to these places try www.megabus.com or national express you maybe able to get a return for just 2 pounds although places such as manchester leeds and liverpool are further away you may be able to get the same deal other than that check out some cheap flight options! Oh and dont forget portsmouth or brighton on the south coast

Just came from Essex (Back in Canada now) but I don't remember seeing any cheap hostels out in Southend Area, I would definetly head the other way out of London cause I think they're more exciting. but that's just personal opinion!

well, don't bother with Swindon. lol

I would say Bath, Bristol, Cardiff... all of which have easy transport from london. Try national express for the occasional cheapie internet return fare-- I've gotten some really good deals on that! You could also look at qjump, the rail site, but the fares are a lot more expensive.

Im from a town called Banbury, it's far enough out of london that its cheep and close enough for you to get to London in an hour and a half. It's a nice town with good nightlife and a lot of history. If you go i recomend the three pigions pub. It's like a proper english local in the centre of town and the landlady Rose is the best cook in the world.

I have heard Bath is quite nice. I agree with SV....stay away from Swindon. My Company has an office there and I have been there a handful of times. Not much to do....just an industrial town. All the locals who work at my company recommend Bath as a great place to check out. I think you can catch the train from London...Paddington station. Here is what I had found previously on this subject, actually:

There is a regular train service from the above stations to Bath Spa. Trains depart from London Paddington via Reading - see First GreatWestern or contact National Rail enquiry line on 08457 48 49 50 for departure times. The journey time is about one and a half hours from London and one hour from Reading.

If you go, let us know how it is.

Ok guys, thanks for all your imput. I ended up going to Cardiff for two nights, then Bath for two nights.

Cardiff was great, a lot smaller than i thought, but still a great place to visit for a couple of days.It had a nice castle, and some good bars to check out. They even have a walkabout

Bath was fantastic. Went there a few years back, so was a little hesitant about going back, but the second time was fantastic. This time i had a very good look around the whole town, and also went on a bit of a hike in the surrounding hills for fantastic views of the city. Find the Bath skyline tour brochure at the tourist info. I want to go back and do the cotswalds walk, its about 100miles of path that starts from bath and goes north through many many little villages. I did if for about 45 mins after i watched a few hot air balloons set off from the parks, but then it got dark and i needed a beer.

I used megabus.com and public transport, and pricing is all over the place.

London to Cardiff (megabus) = £5
Cardiff to Bath (train) = £11.90
Bath to Bristol (local bus) = £3.20
Bristol to London (megabus) = £3.00

Cheers
Lee.
