Default UK weather in October

I'm going to be in the UK for the last three weeks of October and i'm trying to decide what kind of weather to prepare for. I've looked up the average temperatures, but being from Kentucky I don't really know how to prepare for cool-cold weather. Do I need to bring a coat or just layer a light jacket with a sweater?

Halp.

It really depends on how tollerant you are to cold and rain. Personally I think a sweater and a windbreaker/jacket ought to suffice but then again I usually just wear a light coat as I like the rainy cold.

Well, it really does depend on where you will be going. If you are planning on taking a full tour, including Scotland and Northern England, prepare for all types. It will definitely be wetter than October in the Midwest/South. However, unless you are going up to the Pennines or Ben Nevis, I don't think you will need to bring your Columbia winter coat. Layers/jacket are good. But there can be times where, as an American, it gets so humid and you will start sweating profusely. Also, I live by my Umbrella when I'm in the UK. I definitely prefer taking it with me everywhere when I'm there, because the weather changes so fast, even in the relatively nice summer time!

If you don;t mind me asking, where are you headed in the UK?

I haven't decided where I"m going yet, but I'll probably stick to the southern half.

If you're in the south, it should be mild/cool and rainy. It shouldnt dip below 40. According to the BBC Weather Centre the average temps for London in October are from 8-14 celsius (aprox 46-57 Fahrenheit). It's one of their wettest/humidiest months though, so you might get a lot of their crappy 'rainy mist' that no umbrella can shield you from! Other than that, at least it's not too cold!
