Most Interesting City in Germany?

Hi there!

I am looking for the most interesting city in Germany, in reference to historical past.
( I have to do a 20 minute presentation, alles auf Deutsch! ) Berlin, Koeln and Munchen are already taken. I would like to find a city with Roman history/Viking history, stuff like that.
Any input is GREATLY appreciated! Danke!

well I loved Heidelberg, from a traveler's presective - very cool city. I don't know much about the history but there's a huge castle up on the hill that obviously was used for something. haha. try googling Heidelberg!

Dresden, in the former DDR, would make an excellent choice. I haven't visited this city yet, but heard a lot about it.

And its history is rich. Just an excert from wikipedia to get you started:

Quote:

Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendour. The controversial bombing of Dresden in World War II, 40 years in the German Democratic Republic and contemporary city development has changed the face of the city broadly. Considerable restoration work has helped restore selective perspectives of the city.
Since German reunification in 1990, Dresden has re-emerged as a cultural, political and economic centre in the eastern part of Germany.
Viel Glück !

I really loved Rostock and found it very interesting.. it's a hanseatic city on the baltic sea, and has a very long history. The university there is one of the oldest in europe and the whole city is really beautiful

Lübeck was the first city of the Hanseatic league so it has a lot of interesting history from about 1100 onwards. Potsdam would be another good bet as is was one of the capitals of the Holy Roman Empire.

Opps, Potsdam wasn't a capital of the Holy Roman Empire but was actually the unofficial capital of the German Empire. The official capital was Berlin but the royal court was in Potsdam. My bad.

Trier has an interesting Roman history, and much of the Roman architecture still stands - the Porta Negra, baths, ampitheatre, basilica (it's now a Lutheran church)...neat city, lots of fun now.

Also intriguing as the birthplace of Karl Marx. A tour of the Karl Marx house is most interesting.

Good luck mit ihr Projekt!
