Default Scotland, take two

After planning my trip 2 years ago & having to put it on hold, I'm heading to Scotland in May! So excited! I've borrowed every guidebook the library had so I can re-plan my general itinerary for what to see & where to go.

I'm going to pick general areas as hubs & do several day trips at each so I'm not moving every night. I'm going to try NOT planning each day start to finish so if something catches my fancy I can check it out without worrying if it fits in my schedule.

Must sees: (in no certain order)
Isle of Skye (with a side trip to Harris & Lewis)
Inverness with many side trips around the Highlands
Edinburgh
lots of hiking around the lochs
Ben Nevis

I'd love to get up to the Orkneys and Shetland Islands but with only 10 days I definitely won't have the time.

Any suggestions on other "must sees"?

Jenny I think I have the Lonely Planet's Scotland guidebook if you'd like to borrow it for as long as you like!

You're now the 4th person to ask me that Rob. However, I don't think I can fit any of you in my backpack. Sorry.

so you're going to hike the highest peak in Great Britian? very cool. i did this a few years back. and actually this time of year as well. i had to rent crampons and an ice axe to make it to the top, since there was a far amount of snow. pretty short hike when there is not snow i hear. take lots of pictures.

are you renting a car?

If there's a lot of snow, I'll just look from a distance. If not, I plan on hiking it.

I plan on using public transportation to get between "hubs" and then renting bikes or mopeds/whatever to get around locally. From what I've read, Scotland seems to have a good inter-city bus system.
