Default Greece and Rome

Ok you guys...time to pour out your fantastic wealth of travel knowledge.

I'm taking a trip for 7 days to Greece and the Rome for spring break. I'd like to spend 4 days in Greece and three in Rome over Easter weekend...(I know I know it's insane) I'm a theatre teacher and I love Greek and Roman history as well. I've never been too southern or Eastern Europe though I'm living in Germany right now.

I need the lowdown on theatre history locations and sights and well as scenic and historic places to see. There is so much but I really want to know the best of the best. Any suggestions?

Are you looking for ancient theaters that are still standing? Or places mentioned in ancient plays?

Rome is chock-a-block with ancient sites, of course. And the same with Athens. Though you can see the "main" sites of Athens in a day or so. Maybe take some day trips out from there? Delphi is supposed to be awesome, though I didn't make it there on my trip.

If you can scare up an old "Blue Guide" to Rome or Greece, they were by far the best to take to visit historical sights. I don't think they make them anymore, but lots of libraries still have copies of them. They usually include maps and evocative descriptions. So, reading through one of them should give you a good idea of what you'd enjoy seeing...

I can't help you with neither of your destinations, but just dropping by to say I've moved your thread to Western Europe, as Italy is considered in W.E.

Eastern Europe starts on the other side of the Adriatic Sea. And probably because Greece wasn't part of the Iron Curtain, it is also usually considered in southern or western europe.

If your travels take you to the Greek Islands, you may want to consider going to the western coast of Turkey. Turkey has more Roman ruins than Italy, and the world's finest preserved roman amphitheater in the ruins of Ephesus.

Personally the finest theater ruins I have been to were in Bergama, a small town in western turkey. It was on the side of a cliff, and overlooked the entire valley - it was simply amazing. Also this French girl I was travelling with at the time sang a song at the base (like 50 meters down) and we could hear it perfectly!

I think the best Roman amphitheater I've seen was in Jordan...the Middle East definitely has great ancient ruins. I'm dying to get to Leptis Magna in Libya...

^ No, I mean, i guess thats cool if you're into the whole "thousands of years old, really well-preserved, non-tourist trap, sun-drenched ruins fronting a sparkling azure sea background kinda thing"...
