Default Birmingham-Wales: Any advice?

I'm planning on spending 2-3 weeks in Wales in May or June; flying into Birmingham then taking a train or bus into Wales. I'm trying to do some historical sightseeing that involves the mythology and literature of Wales, but I'm having trouble finding places to go. Anyone have some advice or must see places?

Also, what's the weather like that time of year? I always seem to pack for the wrong season no matter where I go.

Cardiff is a must see, I personally like Brecon their beacons are impressive. There are a lot of book stores there as well and a lot of coffee shops in which you can read the books you bought at the many stores. My best friend has connections in Neath and recommends the ffagods and mushy peas served in their markets.

Ludlow is beautiful and extremely interesting, although technically it's in England (it squats on the border, really).

North Wales around snowdonia is amazing, especially areas such as Llanberis, Betws-y-coed and capel curig
