I had not planned on going to nor had interest in London during my excursion but alas decided to because of economical air fare reasons. Since I am headed there I figured I'd spend two days before i shot over to Brussels. Anyone have a suggestion of a decent area of London for Pubs and such. I'd like to get a hostel in that area and loosen up before I head over for what is to be the main part of my trip (Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, and Czech). i am really not into the site seeing in London as much as I will be in the other countries, more the drinking scene I s'pose. 2 nights and out. Thanks!

The Generator and the Picadilly hostels are supposed to be the party places. Unfortunately they have pretty lame liquor laws, they stop serving around 11pm or so. But if you're looking to party, you won't have any trouble finding places to do it in London! If you're interested in sightseeing, most of the museums are free. I'll be there March 25-28, if anyone else is going to be around.

The bar in the Generator closes at 2am nightly. Except Sundays, I think, it closes at 12 midnight.
It's a great place to meet new friends and party.

Retro, did you stay at the Generator? Is it as dirty as I've heard? I'm definitely able to overlook a little mess if the atmosphere makes up for it.

Not sure about hostels in this area, but one cool neighborhood I like in London is Camden Town. There is a crazy mix of people, goths, punks, tourists, etc. There are some great pubs and if you like live music (alt rock, primarily) there are a few pubs with small rock clubs in the back, such as Dublin Castle. There is another cool pub just down from the tube stop that has a DJ spinning 50's rock and roll off of real vinyl 45's...not something you see much anymore. That pub (name escapes me) has a great atmosphere with an interesting and diverse clientel (if you like people watching) and gets hopping earlier in the evening. During the day on weekends Camden Town has a huge outdoor street market where there are all kinds of things for sale. Camden Town is easy to get to on the tube. All, in all, however, there are no shortage of pubs in London. If you like beer, give the Fuller's London Pride a try. Ummm....I could go for one right now.

I was there about a month ago. It's not dirty as many people have described. In fact, it's about as clean (or dirty, depending on your take) as any other hostels I've been to.
Another legendary misconception about the Generator is its cold showers. Well, I didin't experience that either.
I think the biggest attraction of the Generator is its lively atmosphere. While it's mostly famous for its party attitude, one can also chill in the quieter confines of other rooms like the internet room or the smoke-free lunch canteen.
Cheap drinks and food, friendly staff, cool clientele and great location are my thumbs up votes I'd give to the Generator!

I second the call for a visit to Camden....and massive consumption of Fuller's.

I stayed at st. christophers village in Southwick. Which is in south london. I've stayed there twice now and both times I found it pretty good. It doesn't have a kitchen, so cooking and saving money option won't work there. But they do have Belushi's bar which serves food and has good happy hours and 2 for 1 specials. The biggest plus with the hostel is that it is reaaaaaalllllly clean. which is a huge plus for me. The tube is a block away so it is very easy to get anywhere in london.
