tyler,

let's see what I can do to help. first off, are you backpacking? if so, it would be a good idea to get a backpack! you can find out what the right pack is for you, by checking out the "gear" section of this site. the "packing tips" section is also a big help. Good sites to visit are www.rei.com, www.sierratradingpost.com, and www.mec.ca. If you have an Army Surplus Store in your city, they certainly know their packs. Some important documents that you need to have before you leave are your passport, your travellers insurance, your work visa (if you are wanting to work in europe), your hostelling card (visit www.hihostels.ca for information on this and where to get it in your city), and an Internation Student Identity Card or an International Youth Travel Card (visit www.travelcuts.com for more information). This card saves you a bundle on fares/prices around europe. For cheap flights, again, you visit Travel Cuts. Hope that was a bit of help.

Welcome Tyler!
First, I would just say that you can start with a list of countries that you want to visit. From there you can plan out you travel route and your means of travel- to and from each country(ie...Eurail, Bus, cheap regional airlines). Thats the the expensive stuff. Once you've done all that, you can work on accomodations, gear, and the usual preparations.
There are links and tips throughout this site that will help you with the process.

Also, utilize the tips from Crion. She's fast becoming one of our board backpacking guru's ^_^ !

ha ha, tony! you wish! :P

as for an online site for backpacking, there are tons to choose from, but some of my favourites are www.artoftravel.com, www.backpackeurope.com, and www.bugeurope.com. oh and www.esidle.com/travel/. these are all really helpful, and will give you pointers aimed to make your backpacking trip a successful one.

canadianeh-If you you want to read some really great travelogues and stories check out www.bootsnall.com.

hooking up....hehe Well we've all done it in some kind of form. And those who claim they haven't well they're either lying or haven't travelled yet!! aaaah backpacker love. nothing better because you don't have the complicated break up process, since both of you are on the go anyhow.

Travelpunk why don't you share......??

:P

Talking

My first time was about what I had expected, yet still fully indescribable. Nothing can quite adequately convey the actual flesh & blood experience in words. Entering world-famous yet personally uncharted territory for the first time was a long-anticipated event, like Matrix Reloaded. Would it live up to the hype? Well…it was one non-stop intense ride from when I got on until I got off. The novelty of such new and incredible sensations alone was quite overwhelming and I just felt like bursting from excitement the whole time! And I pretty much did lol! Now I knew what I had been missing my whole life and why so many people do it so much. It’s definitely a life-changing experience everyone can cherish and never forget, and (be warned) quite addictive! Cuz after you do it once, you will sure want to keep doing it! Now be prepared, but don’t worry too much about it either - practice will make perfect. So good luck, just enjoy yourself and welcome to the club!

PS – Be sure to take lots of pictures and post them here for us too! We want proof and every graphic detail!

Okay peeps, you're right, I have first hand experience on the topic

Voyd, I couldn't agree with you more! You nailed it on the head What an awesome experience it is to hook up with someone on your backpacking journey of adventure and self discovery. It kind of feels like being in all those movies you watch where the protagonists goes off to a foreign land to do their thing and just happens to meet that special someone just by being in the right place at the right time.

My first backpacking trip was 3 years ago. It was a 24 day trip through Western Europe. I had never been to Europe(or anywhere else for that matter), and didn't know what to expect. I just knew that I was open to just about anything and everything, within reason of course.

I had one email on me of a girl that I knew in Los Angeles. She was an assistant to my talent agent and I only spoke to her for no more than a total of about 10 minutes the whole time she worked there. She did not give me her email address, my agent did as she knew that I was heading off to Europe.
Fast forward- six months later. I'm in France and I get an email response from her. I traveled on train to her town about 5 hours southwest of Paris. Long story short, the spiff was on B)
I stayed in France's beautiful countryside for longer than I expected and I almost didn't make it to Spain because of this serendipitous moment!

I finally left to Spain. I had to. Spain was the focal point of my trip from the beginning and now, time was winding down.
On my second day in Madrid, I was chilling in the park all by my lonesome (for 2 hours!) and met a Danish girl (she sat on the same park bench). This led to a unique look at Madrid with a resident from that city. We hit up the clubs together and she introduced my to all kinds of people, including a Swedish girl that I had a good "rapport" with . Of, course, at this point, I was all tied up emotionally from my experience in France a few days earlier.
On the behest of the Swedish girl and my own worldly desires, I extended my ticket to be in Madrid 5 days more.
On my very last night, before heading back to Los Angeles, they had a little get together for me. At that 3-hour get together, I met a lovely Spanish girl (and her boyfriend 9 years).

Fast forward again. I just came back from a year in Spain and now editing "The Reign in Spain" with my girlfriend..................the Spanish girl :D For FYI, that's her on the top of this page with the hands. I'm right smack in the middle of the logo with her cousin and best friend.
So there you have it, in a nutshell.

That first solo backpacking trip to Europe proved to be the absolute best decision that I have ever made. It BLEW AWAY my expectations and I can't help but think about where would I be today had I not "pulled the trigger?" I wouldn't have met these awesome people, I wouldn't have directed this indepenedent film(got to plug it in!), and I wouldn't have had so many unbelievable experiences in all these countries.

One of my best friends, is a guy that I met on the plane to France that very first day! If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have had any interest in learning how to put up a website. Would Travelpunk have existed otherwise? hmmm....

Becareful to not spend every living moment on your trip with people that you are traveling with. I can't stress enough, the importance of spending your own time wandering the city or sitting at the park for a couple of hours, or just plain ol forcing yourself to interact with people.
Use any and all excuses to talk to people. You will have a much richer travel experience, I guarantee it.

Ok, who's next ?
