Camino de Santiago de Compostella

I'm heading out on this cross-country trek in June, and as the date near, I realize that I have no idea where I'm going! Has anyone out there done this? If so, how is it? Where did you stay? Did you just wander up to a place and pray they had vacancies? How much did you pack?
So many questions, so little time!

Thanks!

I personally did not do this, but I travelled later on in Spain/Morocco with a girl who had done it. She said there are two main routes to choose from. Many of the places to stay were free or of minimal cost. She also said that many grocery stores would give you free food if you were on the hike. She had a very small pack with her as she shipped her other belongings away to retrieve after the hike.
