Default Clothes & Iron?

Hi,

when looking at pictures of everyone who has gone travelling their clothes always seems crisp and straight.

1) But how does this happen without an iron?
2) Or does everyone take an iron with them?
3) Are their irons available in hostels?
4) If not, how do you choose which clothes to take? i.e polyester only? cotton?

Thanks in advance

definitely dont take an iron!

choose clothes that will be comfortable in the weather youll be in...cottons are generally light and airy. I roll my clothes to keep them from wrinkling. And if they wrinkle..hey I'm backpacking it really doesnt matter!

i dont think most hostels have irons...thats a "hotel" thing.

Good grief, the idea of backpacking with an iron:

If you're really worried about wrinkles in your clothes, just try to fold them nicely or hang them whenever possible.

Also, FYI, it's ok to start one thread with all of your general questions instead of many different ones.

A tip is to hang your clothes up when taking a shower and the steam will help straighten them.

um, a iron in a back pack, not the best idea, weight and space. I would of never thought once about my clothes being wrinkled while back packing, kind of takes the freeness of backpacking out of the picture. I agree with washing clothes in the shower and then hanging to dry.

Nooo iron! That would be such a pain in the ass. I roll everything, I think a lot of my stuff is cotton. But to be honest, I've never really given a damn about whether my clothes are wrinkly when I travel. If it really bugs you, just photoshop them out.

I don't even iron at home! But I don't think my clothes need it. Of course, I grew up in an anti-iron household.
It makes life much easy not to iron. When you're buying new stuff, grab a handful of the fabric and squish it. If it wrinkles then you are going to need to iron it. If it doesn't, then buy it!

Haha, yeah the last thing i ever thought of while backpacking was an iron... just hang things when you shower and whatever it is should drop out.

I dont iron, I have learned to love and embrace my wrinkles they are all individual and special just like me, plus i like to compress my clothing and there is no way to avoid wrinkles like that.

Backpack traveling ain't exactly a fashion contest. There are tradeoffs between luxury and the spirit of adventure.

For example, most people will be forced to go at least 24 hours without a shower at some point in their travels. I had 36 hours once. My father went 10 days back in the 70s.

Warning for finicky travelers: traveling in India is frequently not conducive to regular showering.

That's so true, I don't iron stuff even when I'm not traveling.

And my record so far is 6 days in the same clothes without showering...in the middle of nowhere in the Tibetan plateau. Mmm. Yay China.

Iron? What's an iron?

Actually the only time I iron is when I travel ironically... but it's always when I am in a hotel, not a hostel.

Maybe for *some* people it isn't. I watched Martha's backpacking spectacular episode and now I never leave home without my YSL frame-pack and my Dolce shower shoes!!

I have a friend who is SO jealous of the places I go (despite his being a diplomat brat) and whenever I invite him to come along, he says, "yeah, but where would I spend the nights - in one of those....things?!?!" But seriously, ironing is cool and I admire people who do it as "adults" but if you're taking (or have even) clothes that need to be ironed, spring for a hotel instead of a hostel...it fits better with the general comfort level of what you're taking. Most of us take "casual" clothes with us when we go (wicking ANYthing, cargoes, jeans, t-shirts) and not really enough of it to necessitate being too clean, thus eliminating the need to iron!

Am I wrong to assume that surfing or a swim in an ocean does NOT constitute a shower? cause if that is the case.. heck I have gone sooooooo long without a shower. I always stand under those freshwater things on the edge of the beach if they have them... but shampoo? soap? I rarely used them.

^ I think that mostly counts. When I got to the beach for a week I usually "shower" twice a day but only shower twice.
