I was there several years back, stayed at a hostel in Pontorson, which was at the time an utterly charming little town. I believe I took a bus to the mainland shore and walked over to the Mont itself. I also took a stroll out on the sand at low tide, but made sure not to be too far out as the tide changed. Incidentally, I went in July and it poured with rain during the afternoon, so don't assume because it's summer that it'll be warm and sunny. Bring a rain jacket at least! There were some very miserable tourists crammed under whatever awnings and scraps of cover they could find.

I went there as well, but we were staying in Rouen and took a bus out to the Mont. Its gorgeous when the sun is shining and hitting the gold statue (St Michael) at the top of the spire.

When I was there I stayed in St. Malo (I think) ... It was a long time ago and was with my French class though so I didn't have to deal with the accomodations and I don't remember where we were, sorry! It is beautiful, Mont St. Michel, highly recommended.

Default Avranches

I was there a few years ago by myself; I stayed in Avranches, which is a big enough town that there is affordable accomodation. There is a local bus every day in the high season that leaves in the morning, allows you to spend the day there, and then picks you up at like 3 pm. I was afraid it wouldn't be enough time there, but it is not a big place and it is pretty crowded as well; by three I was done. If you do want to stay longer, you can get a taxi back to Avranches, but it is kind of expensive. The other cool thing about Avranches it that that is where all the "treasures" of the Mont are; there is a museum with all the books that used to be housed at the monastery. It was a fairly important library and scriptorium (place of book production) in the Middle Ages, and the books themselves are no longer on the island, they are in Avranches. Good luck, it is beautiful.
