Ladies and Gents...
Can anyone give any advice to getting down to pozello (south siciliy) safely as im thinking that is the cheapest way to ferry to malta...
Im sure it will be ok, but just wondering because there is very little info around on sicily, and i hear its mafia law down that way.
Any advice comrades?

I'd say if you mind your own affairs, La Cosa Nostra is not going to bother you. I have never heard of a traveler to Sicily having any run ins with them.
But uh, just uh, don't go disrespectin' da family, ya see?
Seriously, if that looks like the cheapest way to Malta, go for it! By the way, when are you planning on being there? I'm shooting for mid-March...

Hi there! That's interesting, I went to Sicily via Palermo, and my train buddy was an anti-mafia undercover cop (I actually wasn't sure if he was really a cop or mafia), but anyway, like wwm said, if you mind your business to being a tourist/traveler, they won't try to recruit you! No really, Sicily really has a general culture of port cities, from big and dirty to small and charming, depending on which city. Relax and enjoy!

Ah, well. If it worked out we'd be there at the same time, I was going to suggest having a beer...oops, it's the Mediterranean, a bottle of wine!
Good luck. If I do get there, I'll give you a report!

Yeah, minding your own biz, should keep you out of harms way.
Actually, I heard that Sicily, despite it's mafia influence, is actually one of the safest places in Italy. Guess, nobody be disrespect'n nobody
I haven't studied the following link, but it seems to give a nice breakdown of "fact or fiction" on Sicily's crime rate. ´
Not sure about what transportation, but I know that a Eurail pass should suffice. Anyone know anything about what buses run up and down the country?

Depending on actual dates I might be in the same areas as you guys. Want a third for your 'beer drinking party'? Like mike said... just keep me posted on your plans.

Actually, my plans are to fly FROM London to Malta...there seems to be so many cheap airfares you can buy out of there on the web. I'll probably fly standby (airline employee thing) to and from London on whoever's flights are most open.
Ashpunk, I am planning on leaving March 14 and unfortunately staying only around a week or so. But if you're there, that'd be great! When are you planning on being there?

Well unfortunatly I wont be there (Madrid) until the 7th of July... but other than the first two weeks my plans for the month or two after that are fairly open. It would be fun to be able to meet up with anyone that was out that way. I really want to check out amsterdam, but a friend of mine scared me and told me not to go alone.
Then bye the end of Aug I'm planning on Thailand for sure... maybe Japan, south Korea... whatever I fancy at the time
Then off to Australia ... I'm giving myself 6-12 months for traveling. Nice huh?

I plan on taking the ferry from Naples to Palermo probably sometime in late July. I am somewhat of a mafia enthusiast, so I am looking forward to visitng its birthplace. Interestingly it only exists really in the western part of the island, with Palermo as the epicenter. The town of Corleone will certainly be on the list of places to visit. My goal is to meet a nice mafia princess, have an authentic mafia wedding, and then be given a portion of the family business to run. Or I could just get my picture taken next to the town sign, whatever.
