Default 2 weeks in Italy

I am heading to Italy in March to run the Rome Marathon. We will spend 5 days there before touring the rest of the country. Any tips for 'must see's' or recommended hostels?

I love Italy. No worries about "must sees." There is so much culture and history in Italy that you can't see everything in one trip. When I was over there I tried to see as much of the history as I possibly could in the first few days and then I tried to discover the Italian culture by staying away from the tourist traps for 5 or 6 days. Most people go to Rome, Venice, and Milan. But also go to the small cities and out in the country. Italians are very friendly.

Are you going by train?

We are flying from Rome to Milan but are looking into train costs from Milan to Lake Como or Milan to Florence & Pisa. We are finishing in Pisa and flying back to London from there.

I should tell you, and most others will, go to Pisa for 2-3 hours and leave. Don't plan days there or anything. Once you see the leaning tower and hang at a cafe, thats it. It is TOTALLY worth going, just don't plan a lot of time there.

You know, I have never been to Pisa. I should check it out when I go back in a few years.

Pisa is a short ride from Florence. I left around 10am and was back by 4p including touring the tower, cathedral, and a local sandwich shop.

I am thinking of visiting Venice, Milan, Florence and Naples (in addition to the 5 days in Rome) Is this possible and how many days would you suggest for each?

I did that same trip pretty much in about 3 weeks. My suggestions are:
Venice arrival day, 3 full days.
Florence, if you like museums, 3 days, if not 2 days
Napoli, Use as a base to go to Sorrento and other areas on the Almalfi coast. Maybe Capri or Ischia Island. Don't go to Procida though
Milan arrival day, 3 full days.
And Rome of course.
You should finish in Napoli and fly back to London from there. You will get a cheaper flight out of Napoli, and you aren't going to want to hang in Pisa that long, more of a day trip, so flying out there isn't too logical... Atleast to me its not. Hope this helps some. I have a shit load of info on Italy and what not. Feel free to ask away

I can't wait to hear about your trip! I am going to Italy June 3-18, and I am looking at a few of the places you are hitting. Marc873 got me addicted to the island of Ischia (which if you stay in Naples would be a beautiful day trip). By the looks and sounds of it (haven't been there yet so I cannot stake my life on this) it is a much more mellow, less touristy version of Capri with some lovely baths (SPA DAY!!)
