Western Europe: City Suggestions

Europe: Itinerary

Hey everyone, so as a few of you know I am leaving in a few weeks for my seven month trek to Europe. I have already gotten a lot of help from the people on this board in terms of the hostel life, but I know bring you a new challenge. =) I need to figure out which cities to visit. I have a vague idea of where I am going to go…but not really anything solid. I have a bunch of guide books kicking around my room, but thus far I have found that it is always better to ask people who have experienced it. I also found out I may have to stay in London and Wales for a few weeks while I wait for my visa to go through, so I don’t want to enter the Schengden states listed until then, so if anyone has some advice for that area too, I’d be really keen to hear it. So without further rambling, here are the countries I am going to. I’m hoping to follow this sort of order, but that may change as I travel. My only conditions really are that I go to England and France first, and I have to be in Spain probably March-April, because I’ll be in school in Malaga.

England/Wales
France
Southern Germany (Possibly, if there is enough interest)
Spain (Southern)
Portugal
Italy
Croatia
Greece
Spain (Northern)

Many thanks!

Alli

Alright I took matters into my own hands and came up with a list

London
Nice
Paris
Munich
Barcelona
Salamanca
Madrid
Malaga
Salamanca
Toledo
Valencia
Seville
Cadiz
Pamplona
Lisbon
Lagos
Rome
Venice
Florence
Milan
Naples
Dubrovnik
Athens
Crete
Santorini
Rhodes
Thassos

Whoo! That should keep me occupied for 6 months.

It will take you even longer if you do them in that order ;)

Do them alphabetically...I dare you ;)

Wow, thats a nice list, I have been to a lot of the places you are going, and you will love it. I will be in the greek isles, Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos the month of June if you want to meet up for drinks. Anyway, I'm curious about your efforts to get a schengen visa. I have been under the impression that as long as you are not staying in one schengen country for more that 90 days, you wouldn't need a visa, especially if you have proof of your future travel plans, I could be wrong, but that was my impression.
Looking at your city list, If you work your way down Italy, you could catch a ferry to Dubrovinik, I would also check out Split while there, then take a ferry down to greece and out to the isles. Check out this link:

I would love to help you with any other travel plans. Please don't take my advice on the visa until you know for sure. I wouldn't want to mess you up. I know I researched for eastern EU and being from the states, I didn't need a visa anywhere. And I have been all over Neth,FR,Belg. and didn't get one. Keep me posted.

See, that's what I thought too, that you couldn't spend more than 90 days in one of the Schengden's countries. So I was like "fine, the longest I'll be in Spain will be two months." But then I got to reading further into it a few days ago, because I was getting paranoid fro reading a few of the posts on this board, and it turns out that it's cumulative. There is a movement to change it to the way you described. I don't think I'm going to have much trouble though, my mom is finiancially supporting me, I have a travel plan, and I will be going to school for part of the time that I am there =). I may just have to apply in person while I'm in London though, to make things easier. I'll keep you posted, as it is an extremely confusing process, and even the official website offers little in the area of help. I may be in Greece in June btw, so we shall see =)

As for doing them alphabetically, that truly would be a feat in itself.

I didn't exactly list them in the order that I had planned to visit them. Now I am trying to figure out how long I will need in each city, other than Malaga and Madrid, as well as what order and how to get there. I may not be that far, but it's a start. Thanks for everyones messages so far!

Perhaps you could ask for help on the Schengden countries at one of their embassies or consulates, they might be able to make it a bit more clear... that is if you live in a city with Embassies and Consulates.

Sorry, to bump an older thread, but this is something that is making me think. And I know it is out there but having more trouble than I thought finding info. For a 3 month trip through Europe, where would one need Visas and how would they get them (if not just at the border)? Places that may we may need one, off the top of my head would be Turkey, Czech? We are from Canada.

Thank you, and again, sorry for the possibly very redundant question.

Cheers,

Well, Barcelona and Madrid are on there. Goodjob - those r the best places in the world... as was my experience. Make sure you're there during some fesitval or something.

If you're in Germany, make sure you stop by Munich.

But i think all the real culture's in the small towns - something I did not do - but with 7 months of trekking, im sure you will!
