Heya guys.. I was just wondering...is it practical to plan for a one year travel round Europe alone?

Ummm, what exactly do you mean??

Is it practical to travel around Europe for a year?? Sure, if you have the money.

Is it practical to thoroughly plan out a year long backpacking trip around Europe?? Hell no!! There are way too many plan altering variables that will come into play over a year long trip, such as:
- illness
- cool people you'll meet and wanna travel with for a bit
- cool places that you've never heard of that some backpacker dude tells you about
- all the "i just can't miss that" scenarios that will pop up
- etc, etc

If i was you i'd do a bit of research and get an idea of some places you would like to check out and then play the rest by ear.

I'm doing exactly that starting in october.... I have a place to stay for the first two weeks, a week long tour booked for november and thats all I have planned... who cares if its practical, of course its not practical for me to spend all my money and put off going to uni, but it seems like fun so I'm gonna do it.

If you're concerned that it might be too long for you (everyone has different limits - I couldn't have done it myself, first time round) it's good to know that it's almost always possible to change your flight home, usually for a fee somewhere around $100 - $200 (depends on the carrier, seat availability, etc.) The tickets that are sold with a return date a year out are generally pretty flexible, so you don't need to worry about "what if I can't make it a year/something comes up and I have to go home..." kind of things, at least.

Having an itinerary is much more important on shorter trips, when you have a year to play with, you don't need to sort out in advance the day you're leaving Greece and going to Italy or whatever, you can really just go where and when the spirit moves you. Which is wonderful.

I would think that, unless you have EU work papers, you'll have to plan much more BEFORE you go, in terms of saving every spare penny, because a year abroad, unless you're prepared to live pretty rough, can get pretty costly at least in western Europe. So plan your current life to save every penny, and then you will have more with which to enjoy the freedom of an unplanned life in Europe.

When I go berzerk and extra random for going places I've never been before I tend to mark the points I want to go hit, but not really having a steady road maybe you cross paths to a little town or something that calls your attention or any other thing that might catch your eyes, I tend to travel by the small little towns and all the ones that are nearby the beach! then I cross for points of interests that are in hard middle land, I don't know I just enjoy the "where are we heading, What are we gonnna do?, Where is that dude we met yesterday?, hey where am I" thing! I personally belive it owns to not have a plan yet you know you'll have a blast and not be stressed cause you haven't made time to see this and that when to be honest every little city, town (Xept Ohio!) has something to offer! Even Brazil! (Although I'm so not going back to Brazil until I set my Trasvesti trauma free) Even I laugh about it! So I totally agree with Lost Farmboy, 365 or something days of fun! live it up and chill it's better to get the best of a place than being stressed cause you have to make time!
