Hola fellow globe-trottin freinds. Anyways im here in Berlin right now, about 2 weeks into my 6 week adventure. Well next week im heading down to Rome with my buddy and we are going to be there for about 7 days. I was beginning to think that this might be a long time to be in just one city. My question is: Does anyone know of any good day trips out of Rome? I have my eurail pass so i should be good to ride any of the trains. Im willing to travel as far away as 2 hours i guess if there is anywhere good. Im looking for any cool little towns to just relax and hang out in or any big citys to chill at, anything. Swimming, bike rides, vespa rides, great scenary are all good. Id appreciate any help. Thx fellow t-punks!

where to begin.
firstly there is plenty to do in rome, even for 7 days you'd have stuff that had to be left out because there isnt time.
however there are some cool side trips to do, like Ostia Antica, this was the Roman equivalent of going to the French Riviera. its about 40mins out of rome on the coast, theres the beach, ruins, bike rental etc.
you can easily fit in a day trip to Pompeii. leave early to get to Naples, catch either the bus or circumvesuviana train to the town, spend a few hours and then catch the later train back to rome.
inland there is the towns of montefiascone and orvieto and the garden estates at Tivoli, all worthwhile day trips.

Naples/Pompeii is definitely worth a visit - if you can swing it, visit the National Archaelogical museum in town before heading out to the site, because they have a ton of stuff there, and the site closes later. The museum's closed on Tuesdays, though, so if you want to see it, go some other day.

Assisi is not far from Rome, but a whole different ball of wax. Also, Monte Cassino is not far, but I'm not sure how best to get there. We were driving, so that's easy.

hey darsh!

i'm heading to rome next week as well. i will be traveling italy for 3 weeks and starting there. i will be there for 5 days with one day i have set for an outside day trip.
i was really wanting to head down to naples, however i have been advised by a few that it isn't the best idea for a single girl to travel alone down there. instead i was going to head to tivoli for a day. would could be more fantastic then wandering around someone's hedonisic villa. god i love the italians!
what's the deal with the beaches at ostia? i heard they weren't very clean...is this true?
