day trip from rome

i'm going to be in rome for 5 days at the start of my trip and two days at the end...thats a lot of time to be in one city so i'm wondering if anyone can suggest some places to go on a day trip from rome--hop on a train, see some sights, shoot some film, get back on the train to rome all in one day.

Assisi is nearby, as is Montecassino (very dramatic monastery). Further afield is Naples (2 hours by train, tack on some more to get to Pompeii - great use of film there). Tons more - try to get your hands on a good map of Italy and see what's in range for you. Also, most guidebooks have a list of suggested day trips, see if any of their suggestions appeal.

Assisi or Tivolli would be my top choices. Tivolli is closer...

Pompeii would definately be my choice. Although, 7 days is not too long to spend in Rome.

Pompeii would be my choice. Get up early jump a train, be ready for Napoli, extremely crazy hectic city, but soooo cool. Anyway, Pompeii is so worth it, there is no where else in the world like it. The volcano is still active which makes it a little more interesting!!! It seems as when I was there, most tours left around 10:00 so get there early. If not Pompeii, jump a ferry in Napoli from Porto Beverello, and go to Capri or Ischia islands. I suggest Ischia if you want to really melllllllow out. Capri is fun to go to the Blue Grotto. Google it, and you will see what I am talking about. Happy traveling
