Has anyone here been to Cyprus? How easy is it to get around--can I do it without a car? How cheap is it? I need something super super cheap. I have a pretty good flight from Israel--$281 roundtrip during high season.....

First off, Welcome to travelpunk! Secondly, I don't know about renting a car, but getting around by public transportation is cheap, and their system is pretty good.

globe-trotting uncle lived there for a few years, said the people are the most genuinely nice folks he'd ever met. Also said it sure beat living in Hong Kong. He also said they had the single worst drivers in any country he'd ever been to, and that it was de rigeur for cars to be banged up. Complete disregard for any traffic laws/controls.

So, umm, be careful renting a car, dig? (Welcome to the board!)

I've read up a bit on Cyprus once or twice, but haven't made it there, yet. One thing you might want to avoid (unless you're into it) is the British Holiday package crowd. There are a lot of historic sights and -- from what I hear -- the island has a relaxed, Mediterranean culture. Be a shame to spend the whole time "getting pissed" in bars instead of out seeing an island with imprints left from the Egyptians, Greeks, Crusaders, Arabs, and so on...

I think Mike was warning him to stay away from those bloody pissed Brit wankers that descend on the Mediteranean like so many Biblical disasters every year
