Found a few extra days to travel and thought of Poland. Any suggestions Re. Krakow. Is it worth (whatever that means) an excursion?

absolutely!
one of my favorite cities...just walking around you'll see a lot. the old square, the jewish quarter, wawel castle, you could take an hour bus trip to auschwitz as well.

Oh yes !

It's a beautiful and cool place. Untouched during WWII, its beauty was preserved, and since it's a university town, it's young and laid back. Endless walks, and good night life, wether you like techno, see live jazz, or cafés.

Terribly noisy and packed hostels though, if you want to go during the peak season, better book in advance and bring earplugs !

And as said d_fresh, Auschwitz is a day trip that could unforgettable.

p.s. Have you read this ?

I am plannin on goin to Krakow hopefully for about a week and go and see Auschwitz. It's the number one thing that I want to see here in Europe (i'm a history buff), and since i'm over half way threw my exchange I figure I better hurry up and go. I just have to find a cheap way to get from Holland to Poland.

Auschwitz is indescribable. I didn't realize how emotional I would get there. It is such an amazing trip. One thing you'll see all over is package trips there or cab drivers offering you a ride - don't do it! They way overcharge. You can get a bus for the equivalent of a few dollars and admission is free. Our buses were packed to the hilt - they squeezed as many people on and people were standing, so get in line early.

And yes, Krakow/Crakow is amazing city. Nothing beats pierogies and Zywiec (Jhiv-ie-etz).

you can get an overnight train from Cologne to Warsaw, then its less than 3 hours on the train from Warsaw to Krakow.

Try here for deals on the night train journey. they were doing offers a few weeks ago, from €19 each way! i got a single to prague for €29 a couple of weeks ago. not sure if that offer is still on though. then trains in poland are pretty cheap.

The Wieliczka salt mine is worth going to see if you have a day spare after Auschwitz.

If your going to Auschwitz yourself and not part of an over priced tour you want to take the train to Oswiecim, the camp is not far from the station. Word of advice dont go to the stations toilet!
