hey everyone! i'm found this site and they offer 6 week summer exchanges to romania for a really low price. but they aren't being helpful. sooo, does anyone here know anything at all about romania? food? teen life? night life? day life? the atmostphere of the cities, does it feel like an eastern european post-communism city, or a western european fellow romance language city?

all i know about it is that romanian is the coolest language ever, dragostea din tei is romanian haha, and that i'm 50% romanian(but 6 generations back....not helpful).

oh and what i saw on globe trekker which makes everywhere look really poor, haha.

so any info is appreciated! thanks!

Haha, I just posted about that song in the playlist thread. I thought it was Ukranian.

The country is trying to woo tourists to improve the horrible economy, so it should be pretty cheap yet welcoming at the same time. Its politically stable also, which is always a plus.

I HAD AN AMAZING TIME IN ROMANIA!!!!!

I made friends with a few locals online before I went and stayed with them when we got there. They took us around and showed us Bucaresti night life, which was excellent, and then we took a drive through Brasov and into the Transylvania region. IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL....definately go.....DEFINATELY.......I loved the fact that it wasnt as pristine as western europe. or as expensive. when Going out, I had excellent beer for about 33 cents american. oh, and Romanian girls are HOT and they like english speaking guys....

if you have any questions then ask away.......

I have heard a few stories but nothing major...just dont leave your bag unattended and you shouldnt travel alone either...it wouldnt be a huge deal but you should definately go with a friend and when you sleep make it so no one could take your bag.....OH! and MAKE SURE you get on the right car...some cars are let off at some stops...my friend and I got on the wrong car twice on our way to bucaresti and fell asleep and then woke up in an abandoned train car in a train graveyard outside of bratislava. Also, there was a deluxe private sleeping car for Romanians on our trip south or romania...there was only 1 room occupied so we bribed the attendee to let us stay in one for a night....IT WAS EXCELLENT...for 9 Euro, 3 dollars, and 2 Pounds we got a great night sleep. OH, border patrol is going to be a pain in the ass going through all those east european countries...they dont really bother American passport holders but I dont know how it is with British.....oh and you might need a visa to enter Russia....

Just be careful when you see those poor faces of Romanian orphans waiting to be adopted... no, really!

I met this Aussie guy in Paris and later hung out with him in London... He was talking about going to Romania - and ended up loving it and felt so bad for the numerous orphans there that he adopted one!

Actually, I think it's very noble and kind of him to do something like that, but man, I can't imagine going backpacking and winding up with a little girl to care for! Much respect to the people who can really get something that big out of traveling.
