Slovenia...anybody been?
Hi folks,
Just trying to nail down where I'm going next week for vacation. I've been keeping my eye on a USAirways flight to Frankfort, and it still looks relatively open. Checking where to go out of Frankfort, I really wanted to go to Cyprus, but those options look full. Next in line was Dubrovnik, but all the flights to Croatia, as well as Sarajevo, seem full out of Frankfort. However, the flights to Ljubljana (say that five times fast) look open. So, anybody been to Slovenia....? worldwidemike |
No, but I've heard nothing but good things...btw, how does one correctly pronounce "Ljubljana" ?
Is this another one of those last minute cheap(er) trips you get? |
From friends who lived there, the closest English translation I've heard was:
Li-ub-li-ana, although it's rather subtle. :tumbleweed: |
I have been saying Loo-BLEE-ana and thus far have not had anyone correct me. Hehe
Let me know what you find Mike, I am heading there with a few people around May 10th-ish. One traveller recommended a hostel in a former prison. Sounds cool :) --Joey |
I spent a few days in Slovenia a couple years ago. Very green, mountainous country. Ljubljana (I say it the same as joe7f) was really nice. I heard that celica hostel (the prison one) was pretty cool, but I stayed at fluxus. Was pretty nice. Nice owner. Rooms were very spacious, could have fit twice as many beds easily. Also had an AWESOME game goulash (twice) somewhere in Ljubljana, but the name of the restaurant escapes me right now.
Checked out the Skojcan caves. Heard they were the biggest caves in europe that are accessible to tourists. Kind of an adventure getting out there and back as there were no buses running to them at the time, but this also meant there was really noone else there. Had a private tour pretty much. They were pretty cool i suppose. But the highlight of my time in Slovenia was easily my day trip to Lake Bled. Loved it there. Theres a castle precariously perched on this sheer cliff face looking over the lake. Theres also a monastary out on an island in the middle of the lake, but didn't get out to it. Awesome pics! That looks like a sweet place to visit.

It was end of march/early april. Tiny bit of snow left on the ground in spots. Met some guys out in Bled who were there on a ski trip, but weather wasn't overly cooperative (rain/fog).
I'm glad I could finally make a useful contribution to the boards. Also, if you ever need someone to convince you to go to Croatia, I can help with that. |
Hey, one last question (okay, maybe two):
1) Did you see any places that rented scooters or mopeds in Bled? 2) Do you think the Vrsic Pass is open the last week of April? I'd love to rent a scooter and zoom up over that thing...it's supposed to be phenomenal. Thanks! -- worldwidemike |
Honestly, my time in Slovenia was short and unplanned. I just happened to be in Venice with no real idea of which direction to take my trip. Heard good things about Ljubljana so off I went. Found a guy at the hostel and tagged along with him on two day trips that he had already planned. So I really don't know much about the country. Looking at some pics of the Vrsic pass and looks like a great idea. Don't remember if I seen any places to rent scooters, sorry.
