Modern art in Eastern Europe
Does anyone know of some worthwhile art galleries in Eastern Europe? I'm mainly interested in anything from around the start of Impression (1860s) onward.
What are galleries/ the collections generally like? I am hoping to visit Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland, and am now thinking of Slovenia and Romania too! Let's see where I actually end up! I have a loose idea of some of the cities I want to see, but I am more that willing to rearrange this for the sake of art. I'm pretty excited to see the work of crazy architecht Hundertwasser in Vienna but besides that I can't find much info/ideas. Cheers! |
all i remember is Tallinn in Estonia is full of tiny little galleries.

Louse, I don't know if you believe in coincidences, but I read maybe four words of your post, then decided you NEEDED to see the Hundertwasserhaus, despite the fact that it's modern-modern art, not turn of the century, and that Vienna is not necessarily Eastern Europe or cheap.
...so I'm pleased that after I stopped being a doofus and actually *read* your entire post that it's on your list of things to see. It was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. But you have to watch where you're walking!! I swear, I actually even googled it to get you more info before I saw that you found it yourself. |
Haha, that's awesome. Well, I'm pretty cynical about "coincidences" because think of all the people who will read this and not immediately think about hundertwasser.
Modern-modern art is also good. I just don't really like old stuff. I feel bad poo-pooing any sort of art but :yuk: And yeah, when I was writing the list of places I felt kind of dodge labelling them as 'eastern', I know it's very controversional. But it is more east than I am now. And there is no board for "central" europe And Aliz, I want to go to Tallin sometime too! Well basically when anyone mentions any country I say I want to go there. But I saw 2 awesome films about that city in an art gallery in Haarlem...um...yeah... Well I think most people have pretty random reasons for visiting any place. |
