It depends where and when you are travelling. If you are going during the summer, I would suggest booking ahead as long as you have some sort of itinerary. This is because all of the good hostels tend to get booked up a couple weeks in advance. If you are not going during the summer, then you don't need to book ahead, but I would still suggest it. Look at it this way, if you decide to cancel you reservation, you will be out maybe four euro's, but if you show up in a city with no reservation, it might take you a long time to find a place and also cost money for transportation and phone calls. One other option is to go to the hotel information booths at the train stations or airports. Most of these can book you a place with a hostel or private room when you arrive. I have done this 4-5 times and usually you get a decent place for a cheap price.
