I stayed in a hotel there on my first trip (Soviet requirement for western tourists) and overnight in a hostel normally home to single moms (they got kicked out for the night we were there - I don't know where to), which was absolutely appalling, but since it isn't officially a hostel, there's little chance anyone else would stay there...
Second trip, I stayed with a family met on the first trip, so don't have any info for you, sorry!
watch out for Russian TB , Ive heard they got super consumptrion over there... medicine resistant strains and such... hotles are so dang cheap over there , why not just stay at a hotel?
