Hi T-punkers,

What's a typical food budget for 5 weeks travel? I mean... how much cheeze, bread and booze generally add up to?

Just trying to work out a budget here.... thanx

FIRST TRIP (2005): FIRST EUROTRIP EVER! UK, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Holland
SECOND TRIP (2007): First Solo Trip! Greece, Turkey, Syria, Spain
2008: China (Beijing, Shanghai, Yangshuo) ...right before the Olympics!
2009: Japan & HK, Southern Spain
[size=1]2010: All over Lebanon, Ibiza (Spain), Oktoberfest (Germany), Thailand.
2011: India (Goa), Jordan, Jerusalem, San Sebastian (Spain), Amsterdam (again), London, Driving from Vancouver to L.A. (stopping in Portland, Seattle, San Fran and all the little stops), Montpellier (France), Geneva and Lausanne (Switzerland)

bacon, you're prob going to have to specify where you're going........everywhere is diff, and your styles of eating will be dif too. Like you have to decide how many meals in restaurants ure prob going to want a day, and how many ure prepared to get from a supermarket. But there are already a lot of threads about this going around. Try looking in the "food and drinks international style" forum (i think that';s what its called.....) or the specific forum for the place that you plan on visiting. I'm sure you'll find tons of good information to base your trip on.

I need some help on how much hard cash I should bring. Well im planning on bringing $500 and then just using ATMs when i need cash. I will also have a back up credit card. Is this a good idea? Also how much are transactions fee at ATMs. I will be in five cities (Amsterdam, Paris, Interlaken, Rome, Barcelona).

^^ Mmm. Renzo, for how long will you be in these cities?? I've heard 60-70€ a day shoould get you covered (if of course you aren't planning some major shopping!)

Approximatly 3 days in each city. Oh and no major shopping. Im going for 3 weeks and bringing around $2000 on my debit account.

Just an FYI with debit cards and/or credit cards: MAKE SURE you tell your bank that you're going to be gone!! Frequently when out-of-country charges start appearing on a card a bank may decide to freeze the account because of "suspicious activity". You can usually avoid that by nagging your bank several times before you go. Seriously. Go into your branch, CALL your branch, and call the 1-800 number for your bank and let them know too. Sometimes just letting one person know isn't enough.

It sounds like you've budgeted about $100 a day, which should be plenty, unless you decide you need to buy every plastic statue of the colosseum you run across. I like your plan of bringing x amount of cash and then getting more through your debit card later - it would stink to have the lot stolen. Don't know if I'd bring $500 up front, depends on what expenses you're looking at right off the bat. I guess that's five days worth, so it's probably alright. Keep your ATM card (make sure it's got Cirrus and Plus, and know in advance that not all bank machines here accept all cards, so you may have to do some walking to find one that works for you) separate from you cash, so if you do lose one or the other, you've got a back up. Try to get some smallish bills or change in Euro is possible, to cover those niggling little expenses like bus fare or a meal when you first arrive. We had no problem paying with 20s when we bought bus tickets, but I don't know how they'd have liked a 100...
